Those people bidding should know, pay for the coin, not the holder!

Looks MS-61 or 62. These cello packaged coins were culled during the sale and not put in the GSA plastic holders due to blemishes or other damage and sold at a discount. Looks like heavily bag marked.

That 78-CC came out of the $5 mixed lot.

I think the one in the ebay listing came out of the $3 "circulated" catagory. That group included the CC rejects that were heavily toned and scratched etc. They were mixed in with all of the rest of the circ dollars that were in the GSA hoard and sold with a 3$ minimum bid. There were some nice coins that ended up coming out of that group.

The 5$ group was the uncirculated non-CC coins.

Interesting discussion, I had forgotten most of this. Anyway, I'm in the 58/60 camp.

This guy manipulates the heck out of his photos to make them look more PL than they are. I am guessing the coin has semi-prooflike qualities and is probably a 63 or so, and will go for moon money because of bidiots.

Nope, it's going to go for moon money because it's a Top 100 VAM-11 (considered the most "significant" 1878-CC VAM) in a GSA Soft Pack. I personally think it's Mint State, and as of right now (bidding at $455) hasn't quite reached its' street value unless it's worse than 63. VAM-11 isn't uncommon, or even uncommon in GSA Soft Packs (over 50k 1878-CC's were in the GSA sales; it stands to reason), but demand is brisk. This is gonna be a happy seller whether the images are deceptive or not.

I agree 100% with what Superdave says.

In addition, not only is the Seller gonna be happy, but I believe the Buyer will be, too.

A lot of the value with this item is in the provenence of where it comes from...the GSA Sale of the 1970's.

I'm curious as to how it worked; you simply sent your money and hoped to get a coin, or you could send more than the amounts listed for better odds?

It was a fixed-price issue, incorrectly referred to as an "auction" in some venues.

I know you could bid on the first round of auctions that were held. I believe for the 78-CC it was 15$ minimum on the first go around. The 82, 83 and 84 CC's was a 30$ minimum on the first go around. 80, 81, 85, 90 and 91 all had 60$ minimums and the 79 was a 300$ minimum. (It has been a long time ago and this is pressing my memory.)

If you didn't "win" they'd send you a refund check.

Some of the subsequent sales were fixed price. There was also the mixed uncirculated at 5$ (hard pack) and the mixed circulated (soft pack) at 3$.

I remember opening boxes and being bummed out cause all I was getting was 78-CC's! I thought I was doing good when I'd get an 82, 83 or 84! I had to buy my 90 and 91 on the aftermarket. I couldn't afford the 79 ...even on the after market.

It was fun though!

Before the first GSA CC sale they (the GSA) promoted the coins with displays of Carson City Dollars in plastic holders shaped like the state of Nevada. The ones I remember were white. They were displayed in bank lobbies and were displayed along with sales brochures and bid forms.

It's been a long,long time ago!
Rest in Peace

Thanks for the history IndianGoldEagle & westernsky, unfortunately this was a couple of years before my first Morgan purchase. I would have loved to have been bidding on these back in the day...
