Captainrich - thanks for the reference. I had not heard about this newsletter. It looks pretty cool to me. But then, I also find interest in numismatic advertisements. They keep me up on new ideas and a broad spectrum of prices for various things. Thanks for sharing. Jack

Got my first E-Sylum email tonight. That's going to take some time to go through. Thanks again for the heads up, captainrich!

I'm more of a club journal guy instead of magazines anymore, Asylum, E-Sylum, Gobrecht Journal, John Reich Journal, Numismatist, Fly-In, C4, Pennywise, Errorscope, auction catalogs and older out of print journals that I collect, such as; Out on a Limb, by the Money Tree, and Bowers Rare Coin Reviews, all top my lists of things I read each month, as I can.

I subscribe to COINage magazine, even though I don't collect American coins and don't really have any. I just enjoy reading it and looking at the ads.

As a fellow "tech writer," specifically for government IT systems, I'm glad you like the style of the E-Sylum columns.

Seems to me that most all magazines now days are 80% adds and 20% information. Percentages are just a guess, but the adds seem take up way more than half of a magazine.

I'd still rather look at coin-related ads in numismatic publications than the fashion, drug and car ads in other magazines.

Here in Russia, there's a craze of "get a new cool foreign coin every week/two weeks" sort of magazines (okay, okay, there are only two, but there are plenty of similar ones for other collecting subjects); the only one I ever tried to "subscribe" to (it was more a case of nice relatives buying each new issue for me) provided a nice long description of the week's coin, as well as some articles on unrelated numismatic topics.
It also came in a pretty cover that I didn't want to pull apart for fear of losing the slip with the coin

...By issue 120 or so, the nice relatives themselves got tired of buying the issues that I hardly ever read anyway, so I don't actually have anywhere near a full set. The price had also climbed up since (though it actually became slightly lower if we're counting it in dollars... about $5 per issue now, used to be $6 or so a few years ago).
I think that magazine's on something like issue 293 by now; could well be 193 - don't exactly remember.
The name is Monety I Banknoty (Coins and Banknotes), incidentally. The other one is called Monety I kupyury mira (Coins and paper money of the world).

january1may-Thanks for sharing that experience. It's nice to hear from a collector in Russia (who, by the way, writes extremely well in English). Sometimes, I forget that we have friends who collect in every corner of the world.

True story. One of my other hobbies is woodworking, and while the ads-to-content ratio isn't as bad, I still enjoy reading the woodworking-related ads.

Congrats on 1k posts, january1may!

Just a note over at the Newman Numismatic Portal, all the back issues of Gobrecht Journal, C4 (Colonial Collecting), the Asylum have now been scanned and posted for free - read online or download.

I'm still looking for a few of the Asylum issues (see my want list link below), even though I have them in PDF now, I am trying to complete the set to have hardbound.
