If the requirement of being circulated isn't a huge issue and if you're willing to bend national borders a bit, I would suggest maybe a 20th Century North America silver dollar type set? Like this: 1900-04 or 21 Morgan Peace dollar (Any) Silver Unc. Ike with Eagle reverse Silver Unc. Ike with Bicentennial reverse Silver Proof Ike with Eagle reverse Silver Proof Ike with Bicentennial reverse Modern commemorative dollar (maybe from the year he was born if after 1983?) Canadian Silver Dollar Voyageur design Canadian Silver Dollar Commemorative design (1964 is a common one...then he can say he has a 1964 silver dollar  .) (Alternatively, you could do a Canadian Dollar from George VI and one from Elizabeth II. The silver Voyageur dollars, especially the 1965-66 ones with the 2nd bust of Elizabeth II, are truly beautiful coins, especially in BU). That's the only way I can come up with to bring the grand total to 9, without resorting to doing multiple random US silver dollars. Edited by hcmusicguy

Another (non-junk) suggestion is a coin from each decade of minting going back from the 1930's. So you'd have a 193X, 192X, 190X, 189X, 188X, 187X, 186X, 185X, and 184X.

I like this one, although I think the 184x, 185x, and 186x would run a pretty penny, being the Seated Liberty design. As a cheaper alternative to those three, what about 197x, 198x, and 199x (the former one being a silver Ike, and the latter two being modern commems? Then you'd have the Morgan through moderns. |

If the child likes sports, there were nine commemorative Olympic dollars issued by the mint in 1995/1996, if you include the Special Olympics coin. Of course, these modern commems are all quite shiny, even though the Eunice Kennedy Shriver portrait looks pretty rough.  |

I like your Peace dollar date idea. 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1934, 1935. Sort through the junk dollar trays to get the best condition and strike. It's a good exercise in learning how to grade coins, how to identify cleaning and polishing, recognize cartwheel, etc. "Two minutes ago I would have sold my chances for a tired dime." Fred Astaire

One that would be interesting is to collect 9 different date Morgan coins that are in the VAM top 100. It would be a little advanced for a child collector without help, but what a learning experience. The collection would have a little added value with the top 100 VAM's. I also like the decade collection noted above. |

Year set of Ike dollars with both type I and type II bicentennial (for 75 and 76) that adds up to 9 coins. |

The Ike dollars would be tempting with the silver coins. I just wish you could get toned ones easily. He really enjoys digging though a box of old silver. So nothing in the orginal mint packing would work. |

you could have several different dollar coins ranging from "ikes" to Morgan dollars. For the morgan's maybe a few "sliders" (almost uncirculated, usually some toning, nice eye appeal on most). For the Peace dollars maybe look for one different than the rest if they are in a dealer box. I personally like silver ikes (non proof), and ones that have some character (see my lowball alien ike in the "post an ike" thread). Anyway, try to get a variety of things not necessarily in any specific order, and see what the kid enjoys. Just my 2 cents, PTG |

Well he wants to get the coins himself but wanted ideas, I got him a present today on ebay a 1976 s silver ike. Definitly been out of packaging for awhile toning wise but still decent grade. I ended finding a neglected auction and bid, got it for $6.30 free shipping. I used a gift card so it was only $1.30 out of pocket. Still leaning after Peace dollars. Was there not a type 2 silver ike? Edited by Bertensgrad
