In the Briggs book on these Larry wrote that coins from 1870 to 1873 from Carson City tend to suffer from porosity. Of course, it would be hard to tell when the porosity occurred on this example.

I wish I lived in an area where people actually dropped valuable things or even old coins, but here in North Texas, all I'm likely to find is modern coinage, pull tabs, nails, and scrap iron. Used to do my coinshooting with a DI/Pro & Blue Max combo w/an early electronic PP and never found anything coin-wise older than the 1910s and some costume jewelry. There's just not enough old sites around to detect, and those that are exist have already been heavily worked. Combine with ornery owners who either won't give you permission or demand the right to keep something you find if they like it...no thanks.

It would have been my dream to find such a coin as OP's! I would respectfully request that you post it on (self-censored big detectorist treasure forum) if you have not already done so. :)

AS to the coin -- I think XF is conservative at best... AU details to me. Outstanding state of preservation for a ground recovery, and be lucky you didn't gouge it with the PP, the probe or a trowel...I am very..insanely jealous, and congratulate you again on your accomplishment.

Wow. That's an amazing find! Let's hear the story about how you found it, luckyiguess. Old farm field? Your backyard? Deserted ghost town?

heres the story..
I live near what was the carson city trail in California. At this spot about 15 yrs ago I found a 1849 Half Dime. I been back to the spot at least 30 times with no result. On this day I was thinkin I hadnt found anything good in a while but I didnt want to drive far so I went to this spot just to practice. Within 2 minutes I found it. I like to detect but I'm not a coin collector. But I shared the pictures and story because I figure Ill get a more realistic assesment then from coin dealers in general. (i do like the one I took this to to send to PGCS) So any knowledge that you folks can impart upon me is appreciated cos it seems this is a steep learning curve of a coin to start.
Thanks for everybodys input.

Contact heritage auction if you plan to sell. They may even give you the full hammer price on a coin like this if you negotiate. Meaning they take no fee from you. They make $ on the buyers premium

I'm with PCGS on XF details. In any event, Heritage Coin Auctions without a doubt.
You have a mid to higher teen thousand dollar Coin there.
Congrats on the find. Being in California as well, I wish I can find something like this detecting!

BTW, I highly recommend the book "The Mint on Carson Street" by Rusty Goe.
One of the best authorities on CC coinage.

I'd literally be willing to fly all the way out to California one summer or during the winter and do some hunting if there's potential to find great things like so..

Given the grade, I would say this coin is worth $5,000-$7,000 wholesale, maybe a touch more retail, no more than maybe $8,500 on a perfect day.

EDIT: I apologize, I did not realize how old this thread is. I was looking back to see what I had missed lately.
