should I get a premium membership to PCGS or NGC to send the coins into them for grading?

Go with ANACS for coins up to $500, and go to NGC for the rest. If you join the ANA (it's really cheap) you can get a submission number free for NGC so you can submit directly to them.

Please be very careful as you start out.

You must understand the general scope of your collection before spending hundreds or even thousands on grading fees.

If you have one or two local coin shops in your area, I would start by asking them for a general appraisal - most will give you a quick opinion without charge. or a small charge if there are many items.

NNC is not a well-regarded TPG. Do not get your hopes up too high about their opinions.

Take your time, and start by showing us some of your better items.

Also... Anyone notice they changed the name of this forum to include ICG and ANACS?

I might not throw good money after bad. You can sell/auction them on ebay just like they are in the NNC slabs. If you take decent pics of the coins, the buyers will most likely buy the coin and not the slab anyway.

Membership in the American Numismatic Association allows you to submit your coins directly to the TPG (no dealer middleman). Also, if you're new to the hobby, you'll get a wealth of information from the ANA's monthly magazine, the Numismatist, that comes with your membership. Jack

I am reluctant to sell on ebay because of the fees and PAYPAL costs.

I do not know your level of numismatic knowledge but where are you located?

I am sure if you are close enough to a knowledgeable member of the forum they would be more than willing and enthusiast to see what you gave and offer you advice based on an in hand examination of what you have.

I hear you, but even with the fees, it's still probably the best place to sell. If someone knows a better place please let me know.

I agree with Ed that ebay is probably the best place to sell to get the most value for the collection, but selling on ebay is work with the coin posting, packaging, and shipping. If you do sell the NNC slab coins on ebay, they need to be treated as a raw coin and you can not post the grade in the title.

Another option on coins with a value over $200 each is Great Collection auction. GC will send the raw coins to PCGS at a discount for grading, then, sell the coin in an online auction. GC or any other reputable coin auction house will not sell the coins in the NNC slabs.

Post individual photos of your 10 most valuable coins in the CCF "Grading Forum" and the CCF members will give a fair grading evaluation of your coins to determine if the coins are worth sending in for grading.

Really? Man, I have all my coins graded by them. 10/10 better than NGC and PCGS combined.

I am located in Fayetteville Arkansas, I don't know if there any Coin Community Members located near by that I can show the coins to for a more informed opinion.

I am working on taking some photos today. Should be up tomorrow.

Osprey- perhaps a post replying to a newbie who has inherited a bunch of coins slabbed by NNC isn't the best place for sarcasm... since nobody has come out and DIRECTLY said it:

Rich-

Short answer: No. If the coins are worth sending to PCGS or NGC, send them in the NNC slabs. PCGS/NCG will remove the coins from the slab before beginning the grading process and they are better at doing so than you or I.

Now continuing:

A very rough rule of thumb is that a coin needs to be worth at least $200 to be 'worth' slabbing, since you will pay at least $18 (NGC) plus shipping and insurance per coin (both ways). So 5 coins each worth $200 works out to about $28 per coin in fees (NNC's charges total 12.95/coin from their website). The additional value from the TPG's certification needs to cover that. (Or saleability - many people won't buy coins over some price UNLESS they are certified)

The top two grading companies (in terms of market acceptance) are PCGS and NGC. Then ANACS and finally ICG. Those are the only four companies that ebay allows sellers to use for 'graded' coins. There are other companies, some of which are quite good within their niches, but ebay gives us a bright line (to avoid the usual fights).

Both PCGS and NGC require membership to be able to submit coins. ANACS and ICG do not.

Don't let the cost of membership throw you. There are several options. For example, join the ANA (American Numismatic Association) as a gold member for $28/year (https://www.money.org/account/join) and then when you get your membership you can apply for a FREE NGC ANA level membership. NGC's basic membership is $39 (so the ANA route saves you $11), but the $149 membership includes a $150 credit for grading fees, which is a wash if you use it.

NNC is not a well respected company. Their grading standards range from very loose to appalling. Once in a blue moon they do seem to get it right, but it's more random chance than anything. They often give 'clean' grades to coins that more reputable companies give 'details' grades to because the coin has been cleaned, polished or otherwise damaged.

Thus if you look up the values of the NNC slabbed coins, you need to start from the values a couple grades lower.

For materials worth less than that $200 value, selling on ebay can be done, but it's quite a lot of work. Until you build up some good feedback, people won't always be willing to buy expensive pieces from you. There's the overhead - ebay fees, postage, shipping materials. And dealing with the loonies who buy on ebay. So basically, to maximize the value of the inheritance, you are in for a prolonged effort.

The other option is to pack the whole mess up as is, take it two three or four reputable coin dealers and accept the best offer.

But reputable coin dealers are hard to come by. You definitely want to avoid the local 'cash for gold', jewelry store, etc. Any place who's primary business is metal not numismatic is a bad choice. Maybe people on the board have a recommendation?

Both PCGS and NCG offer a dealer locator - http://www.pcgs.com/Dealers/Default...2701&rad=100 and http://www.ngccoin.com/services/dea...listing.aspx - but I would call/email before just showing up, as many are not retail shops. And most of them are in Ft Smith or even Springfield MO.

Strauss gave a lot of great advice. If the coins are all that PCGS or NGC is where you want them. The one thing I would say is if it's an error coin send it to NGC, my errors will all go to NGC after my last experience.

Anyway though I did want to come in and say Great Collections was a great suggestion. Their fees are the same as ebay basically and less for coins over 1k and they could give advice for what to send where if you ask for help. I've shifted the majority of my stuff there and aside from a weak market in general Ian and the staff there have been fantastic to work with. For the prices things get almost everything is the same as ebay or within spitting distance and you don't have to worry about getting scammed as a seller, some thing just suffer the Internet penalty of being common and to many for sale at once which is normal for those items. if you have a great toner Morgan or modern coin it's the place to sell right now.

Their grading fees get you bulk discounts as well and obviously it's up to you but I would consider using them for at least part of the sale.

ANACS has a grading special on right now as well. Unless the coins are worth $300 or more (grey sheet bid!, not retail), not worth your time or $$ to have graded by PCGS.

Great Collections would be a very good idea.

The BEST idea I have seen on this thread so far, post pictures of the ten best coins.
