The Best Rolls To Search?

Two more questions, when you say real full steps, you mean what? I thought they were pretty easy to spot if you are looking for them, but it sounds like there may be something I don't know. And do you think it is worth the time to put together a full step set? I already have the 50 D so that is a head start, but I am pretty sure the rest are just worn down circulated specimens. I did nickels so long ago that I didn't even know to look for it.

OK, I admit I was skeptical about searching rolls of any coin to find anything good.

I started searching penny rolls. I've found a few wheats, nothing spectacular, average maybe 1 per 100.

But, I have also found a few great error coins, clipped, die errors, etc.

I found a MS small date 1970 S this weekend.

I'm amazed at the condition of many older pennies. I check each one closely. Don't assume they're not old just because they're bright and shiny. The 95% copper pennies on average are not nearly as corroded as the newer variety.

It's cold here in Michigan, I can't ski anymore, so what the heck?

I was thinking about the nickels and pennies since they are cheap and I can get a large volume. I really want to look for silver quarters, but I hear it is impossible.

I started roll searching halves but lately I do way more pennies. Halves are hard to find unless you have $500 to spare and order a box. You can get a full box of pennies for $25 and find all sorts of neat stuff. I find wheaties, foreign, stamped coins, Cuds and other errors & varieties. I also seperate all of the copper cents and sell them for a profit at 1.5cents each in $50-$75 face lots. I then use that profit to buy coins for my date sets & type set.

That's a great idea but where do you take the copper pennies? Who buys them? Thanks in advance.

I search all denominations of coins. Without a doubt you'll find the most silver in halves, but other coin types can be alot of fun. I have statistics on my blog that you might be interested in looking at, total coins searched (by type), total keepers found, as well as my collection to date (see virtual collection) - almost everything (US) has been found in rolls or at the bank. As for finding silver quarters? ... It is possible, but I don't recommend it, unless you really get into roll hunting. Of the 177,380 quarters I've searched I've found 29 silver quarters.

wbryan09, three times in our break room someone has tried to put silver in the machines. The coins were rejected and hit the floor causing me to shout and stop them from trying again. (Bought the coins off them :D ) Anyway, my point is, vending machines normally reject silver coins now.

I was at the bank today and they had a bag of pennies. So I took Carls advice and bought them. I went through them all and found the following:

12 Wheats-the oldest was 1944
11 Canadian Pennies
1 Indian Head 1905 (holed)
1 cent with an angel shape cut out of it.

I think I will try again tomorrow. I am going to buy a box (or equivalent) of pennies, nickels, dimes and halves and I will post what I find.
