In town there is an old bank that is for sale. I have talked with the listing agent and the bank vault with the working time lock 2 foot thick door and all the safety deposit boxes are included in the sale. I have been tempted to throw out a bid as I think I could buy the entire building for 30-35K. It would be the ultimate way to actually display my collection. I just don't know if the wife would be happy about the purchase.

That's awesome davec13. Tempting for sure, if you get it definitely let us know what you find!! Don't forget about overhead if you bid though (electricity, gas, property taxes, etc). Could you imagine owning a real bank vault though? That would be pretty cool!

Can you buy the bank, take a crane and move the vault onto a truck to your house, then sell the property to someone else? Then you wouldn't have to worry about overhead on a second property, and you get the vault! I know people move houses, so a vault with its sturdy construction would be fine for a move I'm sure. Just weight would be the issue then...

I'm pretty sure the vault is built into the structure of the bank itself. I think you would have to demolish the entire bank to move it. If I could figure out another use for the building it would be a smoking deal. Unfortunately it would just be an amazing mancave at the moment. I have a lot of irons in the fire and don't have the time or energy do add more work to it.
The taxes and stuff are really not to bad where I live. They may shock some people who are not from NY, but for NY there pretty cheap. I can ask the former bank manager what monthly utilities used the run. It's one of those scrooge mcduck dreams right now.

And a cool one at that! Best of luck, whatever you decide to do. Maybe start your own LCS out of the deal. Or jeweler. Or make the thing into a bowling alley; that's always been a dream of mine

The vault is the first thing created after the foundation and then everything else is built around it. For what it is worth, repurposing a bank is not unusual. A restaurant up the street from where I work used to be a bank. The vault is used as a gift shop. |
