I am with Dave. I went through every 1883-P as well (with the exception of VAM-22). One of the Weth VAM-1 die pairs was also close, but no cigar. If you post on VW I am sure "Weth" with chime in - he loves when people post 1883-Ps ;)
Close ups would go a long way though if you'd like to have it attributed here rather than by the expert himself over at VAMworld.

As far as a grade a 63 it is. Reverse is much nicer but the obverse has a bag full of chatter. Still love the luster and the die crack patterns.

Thanks for posting more photos. The date photo is the most crucial. I do see a little bit of doubling it seems.. and no dash under the 8. Looks like the coin has a lightly pitted Lady Liberty, and maybe eagle as well? Does your coin have a doubled ear? I will take another look before long once I get a chance. Boy, that lady is cracked up!

Not VAM-1F. Ears are different, wing/neck gap is different, crack pattern is different, and clash rotation is different. I don't see the chip in the nostril either. I started going through the list again the other day, but have not had time to finish up. Still came up short thus far though.

i agree with you twods I'm thinking it may just be a VAM 1 but I'm finding similar die pairing but none are exact.Attributing a coin just by die cracks really does not work but here is a list of the ones I see with a similar die crack on the obv by the date VAM-10 VAM-28 these are the only 2 I see with the exact same die crack by the date again attributing by die cracks does not always work but check out the die markers on these 2 vams and see if you come up with anything

I stopped and studied VAM 28 each time through the listings and discounted it because of the clash orientation at the neck.

Some time earlier I learned that some times VAM's can be attributed by die poop and scratch lines, but from the beginning, it is the MAJOR principles of detail that lead us to the vams ID or a non attributed designation.Details, I think Messy desk was close except Van 28 die crack is about center of the bar and your pic shows its above that, so in that fact it can't be a later die state either.....The main point of interest here and frustration in vaming is...........While some doubling may occur fundamentally clashings and letters are recorded.........and are of interest...I and R rareity... Leroy never gave an idenity to a VAM by its crack alone...So fundamentals are pre eminant here date placement ect...1883 is so far much better to explore than 1878 LOL YET think it was VAM 85......a die crack variety that was a fortune....good luck, some times it takes a while to figure it out even if its a common VAM......vut the chase is worth it..Gene

It is not often I disagree with JB on attribution, but I am with Gene on this one... most everything looks VERY close, but there are several subtle differences that lead me to also believe this is not a VAM 28. I know I initially ruled this one out the couple times I went through the list, but I don't know exactly why. This time it is die markers, cracks, and die clash rotation.. I will follow up.
