Could they be fakes and someone marked them so they won't be worth anything to anybody? Just a thought.

I was thinking that as well, John1, but the VDB on the 1909 S looks to be correct, although I'm not 100% sure about the mint mark it looks pretty good to me. As for the 1914 D, I wish I could get a better, closer, look at the date/MM. Seller looks good, so id assume they are real.

A guy was spending so much time with his coin collection.
When he is was away at a coin show, his wife figured out a
way to get his attention .... leaving her marks on his
prized coins

Rest in Peace

Came home to the wife once to often with beer on your breath. Scissors and a mad wife.

Another opinion... some bored kid with dikes (diagonal cutters) damaging cents he had no clue about. The dikes may have had a notch in them already.

They look like good candidates to put through the next elongated coin machine I come across.

dikes leave a wedge or "V" shaped mark....these marks have parallel edges like a staple that tried to penetrate and then folded over...

or possibly R2D2 bite them in a fit?

Good point, Hrny.

Regardless I think it was a bored kid doing bored things in dad's shop one summer that dragged on too long. Yes, many years ago that kid could have been me.

This looks familiar! About 40 years ago I found this cent in a box of a relative's model airplane parts, from the good old days when all the parts were homemade. I always presumed he did it himself for some reason, but now I'm not so sure. Nothing valuable like the OP's photos, but very similar.
