I can't honestly bring myself to buy such mistakes

Would you bring a coin mislabeled back to the dealer if you found out about the mistake at home?

I guess this isn't quite the same at all, but it sure is nice cherrypicking a worn 1895S Morgan dollar from the junk silver bin at my LCS. :D not labeled wrong but still was very nice getting it at spot.

I have to agree. "Buy the coin not the slab (holder)" applies especially to 2x2 holders. It was a mistake; have made some myself. We are not perfect. Just use this experience as a reminder to closely examine the coin next time.

What a dealer writes on a 2x2 is totally irrelevant to me.
I make my own assessment of a coin and ignore what is written on the holder.
After all it is the coin that I am interested in NOT the dealers opinion of it

I recently bought an Islamic Umayyad silver dirham in EF, from a dealer who specialises in NCLT, because that is where most of his business happens to be.
He had no idea about the Islamic coin despite some discussions with him. Not wrongly labelled, just 'Islamic' and a price.

I bought it for the offer price, which I knew would turn out be very exceptional value for the money.
That is exactly how it turned out to be, when I fully identified it. Got perfect matches through vcoins.

I will. Always thought that the dealers look at every coin so closely that they can't make a mistake. That is where their money comes in, right?

When it comes to grading, dealers can make mistakes like anyone else, it's just that due to their experience, you would expect them to make them far less often, and to a much lesser extent.

Like trout though, I still grade all coins for myself at the point of purchase. I usually ignore the dealer's grade, if noted.

Yes, but everyone makes mistakes.

I have bought more than one coin that I already had because I failed to properly update by spreadsheet.

And also I bought more than one coin from the same person at the same time because I wasn't paying attention

One of those duplicates was from the same dealer, just at two different coin shows about a year apart. This was back when I had a lot more on my to-buy list.

Happens to me so often I sometimes wonder if old age is really getting bad. I started an entire Album of those.

An ethical gray area for sure. If someone asks me my opinion about a coin I'll give them my best information and try to negotiate a fair price if I'm interested and they want to sell. At a coin show or when picking through a dealer's 2x2s I'm looking for bargains. Those would include undergraded or mid-identified pieces.

A recent example was a 1908-S Indian cent mislabeled as 1908. The marked price was $20 or so. I handed the flip to the seller and asked if they could come down any. The answer was "no" so I bought it at the marked price. Totally guilt-free score IMO.

Other scores include 1909-O Barber quarters and a 1923-S quarter with barely readable date in the junk bins. I call it coin collecting. What's the point of looking if you're just going to throw the good stuff back?

Now I am going to look at every coin in the x% off box of 2x2s and see if I can score some more :)
