Quote: Does the Santa Maria on the Columbian Exposition half dollar not count as a main motif? I did not originally include it ... but just for fun, why not? This adjustment gives us six classic silver commemorative with ships as a 'main' motif. 1892 Columbian Exposition Half Dollar - PCGS MS66/CAC Also available as an 1893 dated coin. David

Great post! Always nice to see excellent images of great examples of US commemorative coins.
"Ships on Coins" is definitely one of the more popular of the topical collecting themes for collectors, and having coins from the classic US series as part of such a collection can't be beat.
If a collector wished to expand beyond nickelsearcher's "main motif" theme, there are four other classic commemoratives that feature one or more ships as a minor part of their design:
1. Bay Bridge: a ferry boat and an ocean liner on the reverse 2. Norfolk: three-masted sailing ship on obverse 3. Roanoke: a pair of sailing ships on the reverse 4. San Diego: a sailing ship is seen behind Minerva on the obverse
Of course, if you'll allow the definition of "ship" to stretch enough to include canoes, you could also include the Rhode Island half dollar in a "water craft" themed collection.
Thanks to nickelsearcher for getting this one started!

My thanks as well to commems for the insightful comments expanding the possibility of ships on USA commemorative. I originally excluded the Columbian Expo half because I felt the half image on the reverse was not a 'main motif' ... now see that I was obviously out-voted by the CCF family on that decision. Quote: One of my favorites, shot by Brandon Kelly.... Exceptional coin Bobby and even better photograph! That is one of the very few toned commemorative that I would actually be interested in. Lovely. Since commems politely opened the door to other 'minor' ships on the classic silver commemorative series ... I'll post a few poor David photos of the choices ... as always with an honest circulated example at the end. 1936 San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Half Dollar - PCGS MS66/CAC The ship can indeed be viewed on the reverse ... approaching from the left towards the bridge. 1936 Norfolk (VA) Bicentennial half dollar - PCGS MS67/CAC No doubt where this ship is ... on the very cluttered obverse. 1937 Roanoke Island (NC) Tercentenary Half Dollar - PCGS MS66/CAC Two ships on the reverse surrounding the portrait of Ellinor Dare and her baby ... named Virginia. I believe the only USA coin ever to show a named mother and baby. 1935-S California - Pacific Exposition Half Dollar - PCGS MS66/CAC Known informally as the San Diego half dollar ... also available in a 1936-D version. There is indeed a ship image shown on the obverse behind the left (facing) image of Minerva. To conclude this post ... promised one coin from my certified circulated set ... so I close the photos with this lovely coin ... 1937 Roanoke Island (NC) Tercentenary Half Dollar - PCGS G06 Truly enjoy the lovely honest circulated surfaces of this very rare coin. Calling all other USA ship coins out there ...show us what you have. Enjoy - David

Great pics of ships on this thread. Perhaps our next discussion will be on why the FR02 Pilgrim is not a PO01

All ships are not created equal as the photos below clearly show. I suppose the most remarkable one I've owned is not known for its beauty but rather the opposite - an otherwise superb uncirculated 1920 Pilgrim with the central mast and rigging partially obliterated either from strike through and/or badly worn dies.
