Wow ... that's an incredible find indeed. I have zero expertise on the topic ... but believe this is the real deal and those obsolete note plates might be worth a lot to a collector who specializes in such items.

Best of wishes with the eventual sale.

Hopeful you keep us posted on how it goes for you.

David

i just tried to send you a email to advise that I just sent Q. David Bowers your description (below) and advised that you also had photos of the plates posted..

The key still works perfect to lock and unlock the box. Then the lid slides off and their are slots for the steel printing plates. I have 2 steel plates that fit in the box. The copper plate must be something different because it is much bigger with its border (doesn't fit in box), and the back doesn't have a hole for a bolt to be screwed in to the printing press. It was kept in the cardboard envelope with the old ink writing on it. In the old Haxby obsolete book all notes from this bank (Rockland Maine) are SENC (Surviving Examples Not Confirmed). Any information on value, who to contact, how to sell it would be appreciated. Is there anything like this that has ever sold before for a reference? Thank you! I got it from an elderly man set up at a coin show that used to collect everything Maine because he lived their.

I also sent him the link, and was going to forward you the message...

Lets see if he replies, as I know noboby else that may have the answers you seek..

Good Luck

I am with ArrowsandRays, wicked (we have that in NB too).

A lad at our coin club is from Maine and almost exclusively collects paper money.
I will have to get a hold of out club's president and see if I can get an email for the guy.
I am not sure if he would know what this is but he may very well be a potential buyer. He does the Baltimore shows and all that, big paper guy like I said.

Very nice find.

The last time I emailed Mr.Bowers he was preparing to go to a major show.
I ended up talking to him in person at the show.

Well, I consigned it to Heritage Auctions. It will be in this September's Long Beach coin show in California in the Signature Auction. It was estimated to start bidding around $3,000-$5,0000. Wish me luck!

I noticed the wax seals on the front of the box, Can you make out those seals, who made them? I would love to own these as well. They are very cool and I have nothing like that in my collection. The wax seals interest me.

Well, it sold two days ago at Heritage for a mere $2,200 without the buyers premium. After fees I still made a nice thousand dollars profit but I could have sold it for double that on ebay or through our mail order catalog. It was a good experience and now I won't be wondering what it would have bid up to if I never put it in auction. Thanks everyone for your advice and help. I'll let you know if anything else special comes through my hands.

Thanks for closing the loop on this one for us, and for sharing your excellent find with us in the first place. Wish you had gotten more but $1k is $1k!
