Details are AU-58, the luster is AU-53/55, so I would say AU-58.

AU53 I tried the Early Dollar Die Attribution Wizard, I am about 95% sure it's BB-185, B-20 however I am a newbie so I might be wrong. Adding link to the wizard if anyone else wants to try attributing it http://www.earlydollars.org/wizardhome.htm-MV

Holy cow billjones ... this is a monster coin indeed. You have not been with us for long ... but have certainly been willing to share some amazing examples of USA coinage ... for which I am personally thankful. I have no experience with early USA dollars ... therefore my comments below are simply from an informed collector. I see (by photo) luster all over the coin ... and the 13 obverse stars appear to be well struck up ... causing me to wonder what is going on with the weakness seen in Ms. Liberty hair adjacent to her neck line? The reverse shows some kind of die marker above (left) the letter "S" in STATES ... This is absolutely one of the most outstanding USA early dollar coins I have ever had the pleasure of viewing ... truly Thank You for sharing it. My guess on grade is simply that ... an uninformed guess. MS63 if recently re-graded by today's standards. David

AU53 modern grade.
Once upon a time, Extremely Fine was almost a top end coin, and About Uncirculated coins were what TPGs now call MS60-MS62...

I'm thinking 55 also but a low MS grade is not out of the question these days. Pretty surfaces.

IMO: Twenty years ago VF because a little mint luster remained.
Today, no telling! It is my AU-55 but TPGS AU-58. IMO, if a TPGS or anyone else called this coin MS they should be spanked and the state of grading education is worse than I thought!

This 1800 Bust Dollar is a Bolender 20, and it is the discovery specimen for the variety. Bolender discovered this coin as the first of its kind and used a photo of the obverse as the plate coin in his book on Bust Dollar die varieties. The obverse die failed early on as shown by the sinking and disappearing detail in the center of the obverse. That probably accounts for the rarity of this variety which is now an R-5 or high R-4. (probably 50 to 75 known) This coin has been off the numismatic market since 1976. Back then it was graded EF-45. Today it is in an NGC AU-58 holder. It's probably an AU-55 by today's standards. If you were to sell this coin as an EF-45 and price it according at that grade, you would be giving away money hand over fist. I bought this coin at the 1976 ANA Convention, which held in New York City.
