I have cracked out nice coins to fill empty holes in my 7070, and
not felt bad at all.

To crack or not to crack.

If it is a coin you think you will sell in the future, and it will sell
better in the slab, then don't crack it.

The coin is the same, weather it is in the slab or out. If it will make
you happy having it filling that empty hole.

A option is to put a similar coin in the empty hole and make a
label/sticker with the slab information on it.

So what will make you the happiest
Empty hole
Labeled hole
Filled hole

I crack em out and put the paper insert in the back

+1. This what I did. I did it after seeing someone else's collection in a Dansco 7070 with this done several years ago.

I mostly was able to do raw coins in my 7070 but I probably cracked maybe 4 or 5 slabs to complete it. I have cracked a number of slabs for my Lincoln collection, so in general I tend towards cracking them out.

Cracking your coins out to fill your 7070 is fine -- until you go to sell them.
If that's not a concern then crack away.

My type set is based on the NGC Registry Set.
And ALL of the coins in my set are slabbed.
They have to be for me to enter them into the Registry Set.
And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I am getting to that point. I may buy a slabbed coin just so I know it's genuine, then I will crack it and put it in my album. It's not like I'm going to buy a 25000 coin for my collection anyways.

Why spend money on low grade coins or counterfeits?

Actually, buying the counterfeits was a valuable educational experience. They allow you to get a "feel" for the counterfeits that just looking at pictures does not supply. Also, my type album has holes for coins like the chain cent and flowing hair dollar, so filling the holes with counterfeits is the best I can do on my budget right now.

I would keep them in the holder.

While I'm not a type set person, I am being confronted with the same issue with my Morgans.

I don't know if this is possible for you, but what I will do with the coins that I'm going to keep slabbed (1893-S, 1889-CC) is take a few spare Morgans and put them reverse first in the holes. The certified coins'll never be far, and the album will look complete.

I have 8 missing holes left in my 7070 album. I have had a lot of fun working on it. I am wondering what others have done with regards to buying certified coins for their 7070. Did you crack them out and put them in the album or just keep them close by and pull the slabs out when looking at the album.
I have three holes left and have yet to buy a slabbed coin. However, if I need to buy a slabbed coin to fill those holes I will. I will certainly crack the slab and I will put the labels inside the album cover.

Thanks for everybody's ideas and suggestions. I think I am going to keep the coins in the slab for now and once I actually have the set complete I will probably crack them out. I am fairly confident that the slabbed coins are graded accurately and I think they would grade the same grade if I ever wanted to upgrade and resubmit the coin to a TPG before I sold it.

Well everybody...the set is now complete (minus the gold...I only have 3 of those!). Now I just have to wait until I receive them all. I hope to start a new thread the first part of next week that shows everything. I just don't think I can crack my slabbed examples out quite yet, but I am not ruling it out one day.

I was able to complete my 7070 with all raw coins. Although, I have several coins that need to be upgraded in the future.

To crack or not? For my Lincoln Cent collection, I did buy a 1914-D in VG08 condition that was slabbed. I got it cheap and it is my first coin I cracked out of the case to put into an album. While I had no problem doing that, I can't bring myself to cracking out my valuable 1909-S VDB "woody" AU58 to fill a hole. I think you need to weigh how much the coin is worth slabbed vs. unslabbed before making a decision.

I am glad you were able to give that cent a good home.

If and when I need to crack a coin for a Dansco hole, I doubt it will be high grade, certainly not MS.
