That's OK Tony. I spent some time at Heritage Auctions looking at several specimens in each grade. I could see variation between coins...and between prices. While the grades were the same, the areas affected and the number of issues varied. One might have many little hits and a couple bigger ones in less conspicuous areas while others had fewer hits but in obvious areas. Nothing you don't already know. Both might grade the same but the prices paid reflected interest and level of distractions. Grading is a refined art I suppose and subjective. I appreciate the number of responses as it sets up the range of estimates. Overall, for the price I paid, I feel justified by the estimates offered here. Thank you for yours.

Here's an image where I tried to capture the luster.

Much better pictures, at least 65RD with a shot at 66 given the luster.

Time WELL SPENT! Ha.com is awesome for learning how to grade based on the TPG standards. I have mega-hours on their and PCGS's website.

I think so too Thad. It helped me cap my spending based on what I was seeing with these two specimens. Based on grade and the general appearance of the coin (eg where the blemishes were and their severity) along with prices paid there and online ( ebay) I was able to get comfortable. Posting here for the group validation confirmed my position. It is nice having a number of resources to cross reference right at one's fingertips.

PS. And I used the pictorial guides at PCGS as well.

I don't often use the PCGS Grading Guide, I use the pictures found when you click on a specific coin and year in the price list. They usually have 2-3 pictures there. Then, if you scroll down, you can see complete auction listings.....usually ha.com, which, as you know, has excellent pictures.

Thank you for that tip. I was using the photo images of the coins (cents) to help train the eye. But I actually found the HA slabbed specimens most helpful since they offer a range of looks within a grade. Helps to define the areas where a ding is better accepted and where a ding is less accepted.

That said, the group here really do a nice job of dialing in. Really, not even ball-parking. They are usually within a point on a graded coin...at worst.

Exactly!

Another tip: Get to know your LCS and the main grader there. My LCS guy taught me a lot. He even shows me submissions, the final grades and the rejects. I find the rejected coins the most interesting!
