I wondered if they were cuts made into the shield area of the reverse. There looks like 3 or 4. They scribed carefully lightly across the coin to make a cut without splitting the plating. They also made sure not to go into the incuse EPU as well.

That sounds like it would be a lot of work and a good pair of eyes. Well interesting no matter I think I will hold on to it for a bit just in case I come across it again. Just so strange  thanks for looking. |

Could it be from a scratched die?

The shield is deep within the die. So it would be hard for it to be scratch as far a I can see. On the fields it would be easy. But hard on deeper devices. Also the EPU would be raised on the die to make an incuse mark on the shield. That would also make it hard to be scratched like that.

It wasn't on the die and it's not a struck through. I think Coop was right about the scribing. That could make the lines appear to be raised, but not really. It was done on purpose. Sure is odd.

If it was scribed through the plating, you might save it to see if it raises un-equally in that area? (kind of a test subject. Don't put it in a 2X2 or anything that is prevents oxygen to get to it. Let it breathe and see what happens.

Will do as I am very curious about it. I'll put a note on my calendar to check it in a months time or do you think longer? If it is going to do something should I put in a sunny area like my windowsill.
It has already been out in circulation for 4 years now (of course not knowing if/when it was scribed) - I can send it to for a look?

On a lot of the one with the split plating at the bottom of the mint mark, it took 20+ until the mint mark fell off the coin. So it might be a long project. Or then again it might happen sooner. Just takes patience.
