Well I'm thinking that it is a die gouge coming off of the D (a straight on photo would help and a bit closer) - it looks like it is raised. Don't know on the S though DD's are difficult for me especially on the Obverse of the Wheats.

Also, it is great that you are wrong with the names of things, because now you can learn. The more you mess up, the more you can learn. From what I've seen, you have a very nice uncirculated Wheat cent collection that has many varieties. Post all the questions you have so you and other members of this forum can learn.

Ok scratch everything I said, the "horn" looks like a die Gouge like Sandy said but look at your coin and compare it to this. There is a small possibility that this is a late Die state example of this DDO.

The photo up is a Mid die state so it won't have the die gouge from the mintmark, but just compare the two coins and let us know the results.

The 'S' on TRUST is normal overall size. When a device is doubled, they enlarge. It looks there was an issue with a very small amount of grease in the die. When this happens the device is not longer tapered, but just showing the width of the device from the base of the device.
1958-D-Lincoln-Wheat-Mint-Variety-Or-Mint-Error?
The taper in the design of the devices allow the coin to not stick to the die after the strike. So the grease blocked the upper part from forming and the lower part if showing the area where the grease wasn't in the dies device. (if the die was totally full, then you would not see the device at all)

The field of the die was gouged neat the mint mark making mark raised.

thanks Coop.
And Dustin, I think I am learning. Anyway, I feel like that mint mark is more like this coin..... 1958D-1MM-017
what do you think?

It can't be 1958D-1MM-017. The location of the mint mark is totally different.
http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/...ie_state=mds
The mark on 017 is part of a failed punching of the mint mark that was too close of the date.

so then this coin isn't a 1958D-1MM-017 type coin either?

It's just a scratched Die, any added value? So this would be a variety and not an Error, right?

Grease Filled Die is an error, but it is common. No added value usually - except sometimes when it is unique in it's own way. Like coop mentioned if it was totally blocked and the letter or letters are completely missing - when you get them on the front it is usually more interesting. Just depends on who "likes" what you have to sell at the time you are selling it, plus the cent you have is a beauty and with the die gouge coming off the MM that gives it a some style (IMHO) I like that kind of stuff.

I think these are pretty neat. Also, you are definitely learning, I can tell, your knowledge has grown since your first post. Every time you read, you learn something new. Keep on reading and you will know a lot more than you ever thought existed. Good luck and keep posting those beautiful wheat cents.
