I don't believe so Vatreni, Pennies were made of 95-98% copper from 1858-1996. Copper is not magnetic and I have never heard of or seen old magnetic Canadian pennies - they would have to be made of something other than copper.
Not sure what you're referring to rocky... unless it is a mint error struck on a different metal planchet (coin blank) I only know of the USA having steel pennies around the 40's. I don't see anything resembling a steel core.

The newer pennies are made of primarily Steel (magnetic) or Zinc (non-magnetic) which is where the magnetic/non magnetic varieties come from.
Zinc only from 1997-2002 Steel OR Zinc from 2002-2012

Vatreni when I look at your coin. it look like there is the two sides is pressed on to a metal plate. well in 1942 pennies was not made this way. its like your penny has a separate core in the center. if it does and this coin is real. lets just say you got a coin. that coin would be a keeper. try to take a picture of the edge of the coin. that would help. have a great one

? This is a total basket case of a coin. Nothing but PMD.

I agree with Pacificoin. PMD ! Look at all the dings on the coin. Look at the metal flow on the large dent.

It could have been some sort of lamination, but the coin is in such bad shape it doesn.t really matter.

Vatreni, where did you get this penny? A lot of times we play a sort of guessing game, knowing nothing of the past history that might yield clues. It appears to me to have been very heavily corroded at some point in time, obvious by the numerous deep pits and impressions.
But anyone, I'd be curious to know what might cause that area of the rim to separate, then flop over like that? Constant high heat, acid, sewer?

It's not a lamination as I take the third look as the letter would have over struck the rim peel, my guess some jeweller or so try to peel the rim back as something cool to do.

@rocky .. I took a couple of side shots on the edges. There is no magnetism. @wildflowerAB .. I originally inherited this collection of coins earlier this year from someone in my family. It's coin that was in circulation and came through the business. Recently was going through one of the 1940's penny bags that I sorted a few months ago and just found this one. It struck me as bit odd, so I posted it. It was one of the first coins I grabbed out of that bag. My feeling was it was done atferwards, but those lines were very strange almost melted down.

There are SO hard to come by we sell them 5 for a buck at the Market . Drop by , we only have a couple of thousand at any given time. Any date you want from 1938 to 1952, lots are ExF or better. They are not big sellers.

Glad you clarified Shafta . The coin is scarce in 64 RED and Rare in 65 RED or better. Most 1942 BU cents are very dull pinkish red in appearance and subject to ugly black spotting for some reason. Could have been the War having something to do with it. Superb strikes , with nice colour and good eye appeal are extremely difficult. Nearly as difficult as 1941 coins.
