My entire collection is lowball (practically). Some selections:

january1may, I remember you posting you had some British pennies that would certainly be considered lowball (and some even beyond that, with no legible date). That is also an area to consider for lowball collecting.

Then, there are these Russian coppers:

Thanks to their design, the obverse may be completely gone but the date is often still there.

Though it makes you wonder whether that's genuine wear. Being from 1938, it didn't have much time to circulate.

He's my 1782 Russian Rouble. Lots of honest wear. The reverse might keep it up at an AG3, but the obverse is rather gone :)

DL20K: Yeah, I share your scepticism. It had only a couple of years to circulate ... Still, I kind of like this one, whatever happened to it.

I have a Romanian 200 lei 1942 in similarly worn condition (it's actually so worn that the date is unreadable - but it's a one year type).
I've also always wondered how it managed to get that worn - the monetary system changed completely a few years later.

That's the inherent characteristic of lowball coins. As you have surely read, people have been carrying so-called pocket pieces with them for years which, of course, results in additional wear.

There is no clear line between "this is normal for the type" and "this couldn't have happened" or a method of proving the latter.

Then, some coins, for example that which Dagaz has shown, might actually end up looking a bit better after such treatment.

On an unrelated note, I wonder if lowball collecting takes off outside North America.

A well-circulated Prussian thaler has recently been listed here. And while the description says the last digit of the date is not legible, a careful comparison of images of such thalers dated 1803 and 1807 (based on the images, it should be one of these) could be conclusive. The mintmark, located below the date, is probably gone for good, though.

I believe your latest lowball coin is actually from Belgium

This is one from France. Notice the open top on the wreath and the location of the star.

I bought a lot of random lots on ebay over the last year, and ended up with some neat lowballs. This one I think crosses the threshold into slug, but it's fun to look at:

I have quite a few lowballs, but I believe that this has to be my favorite. It is an 1886 Mexican 10 Centavos CH.M. mint. It has a mintage of only 45,000.
