When one hears stories about people having no clue about coins it's still hard to imagine that these folks wouldn't even take the time to first ask a couple of places to keep everyone honest.
That's one of the great features about unfettered capitalism and a US citizen's freedom to choose w/o governmental interference etc...

Nice find, love those teller trays -
The bank teller cannot accept more than face value for a coin off the line. Several banks here have a no-accept policy, when it comes to certain collectible/silver coinage.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

The gold coins are still legal tender but they probably wouldn't accept coins they don't recognize, legal tender or not.
There is no law or rule requiring banks to accept any coins for deposit or cashing if they choose not to.

And n9jig is right, legal tender laws to dot apply to deposits, only for paying debts.

A teller should cannot accept non-legal tender coins, but if I were a teller, I'd have a hard time turning away double eagles from 1932 and older at face.

Timing is everything. I wonder what came of that gold...
I haven't spied silver from a tray yet, but hopefully it will happen someday soon!

The most interesting thing about @Typecoin971793's story is that the person cashing them in seemed bound and determined to lose a lot of money. they were so desperate for cash but they wanted to dig their hole deeper. Maybe the reason they were so desperate is that they couldn't even take the slightest steps to maximise their resources.
Oh, well, they made their choice despite informed advice from the bank teller who was trying to help.

The teller knew the coins were valuable and didn't buy them themselves?

I've been told several times by cashiers in grocery stores, liquor stores, etc. in the last few years that in the previous week or so someone, usually a teenager, had come in with a bunch of silver coins and used them to buy stuff with at face value. Invariably the story goes that the coins were in really good condition, and had probably been swiped from their dad's coin collection. They always bring it up when they see me going through my change, checking the dates.

Nice find. Sure wish I were taller so I could see into the trays. Most of the counters are too tall and I can't see over them.
