Yes, I realize this, but a small, consice, and informative reference guide for roll hunters would be utilized a lot. I am not asking about what to buy/look at at the B&M, though that info is good to have also. The "right price" for a roll hunter is face value. I think that my question was clear and that response was a bit general. I really had to contain my sarcasm (a very hard thing to do at times). I was tired of responses like that the second time that I read one. Whenever someone has a valid request about what they should collect, they are barraged with answers like this. All they are looking for is something like, "I would think about X, Y, or Z coins because they are kind of out of favor lately, and are easy to find, etc." Yes, I agree that one should collect what they like, though I highly doubt someone will collect something they can't afford, I really don't know how it could be possible! If it was possible I would be collecting MS $5 and $10 gold Indians. Now I have to stop lest my sarcasm rear its ugly head any further, and I really don't want anyone to think I am too crass.

I think that I (with everyone's help) will be able to squeeze everything down into a guide. I think that I will use this thread mainly as a place for collaboration and discussion, and when the time comes place the actual guide someplace else.

Oh, I'm excited about this threadd! <<< Ha, a double-d error! Anyway, I'm a complete noob, but when I go through a roll of coins, I'm completely and utterly overwhelmed. This will help a bunch. I love the idea of a shorthand list for going to the coin store, too.

Just so you know...the "Fancy 5" 5/4 is not actually an overdate but due to a defective punch. The same punch was used on some 2-cent pieces. The only verified IHC overdate is the 1888/7 Snow-1. These coins actually lost their value when the overdate was debunked!

Basically, there are three areas you need to look for. And it's a long list if you're new to coin collecting.

1st Area - Errors/Varieties. This list is as long as you like. For each year and mintmark of the Lincoln Cent, there are probably at least 2-5 varieties. You'll never get a short list of this for all the coins you're searching through. It depends how MANY of these you want to look for. The penny is the big error/variety one, but they exist for the other denominations too.

2nd Area - Coins you shouldn't be seeing in circulation. That includes proof coins, the coins that weren't released into general circulation (like post 2001 Kennedy halves) and so forth. This is an "easy" list once you gain a bit of experience because you'll just "know" what they are.

3rd Area - Rare coins. That's anything you want. Some people think that means Jefferson nickels before 1962 or Wheat Cents or whatever. There you have to make up your own list.

I actually have a 4th area - anything that's more than a few years old and is in really pristine, AU shape, I keep.

NIFC = Not intended for circulation.

Magusxxx, just for clairification, when you say DD you mean Doubled Date correct? And when you say "1964 / D DD" you mean that the 1964 P and D both have possible double dates correct?
