I'm retired. Like you I've played guitar since 1964. I've stopped playing now and prefer karaoke. I worked in a grocery store for 45 years until my feet retired on me in 2010. I started coin/stamp collecting as a kid. When the children grew up and things slowed down, I went back into coins. Since about 1996 I started again and met my teacher online and have been hooked/addicted/loving the hobby since then. I got into this again when I started on the internet. My first chat board was on ebay coin forum about then. I've been glued to it since then. With the coin field came, education and editing images for this purpose. I'm getting closer now to 6,000 images on my image hosts. I've lived in Phoenix for 37 years now. (Iowa for 30 years)

Quote: But it seems risky to buy them for my budget and it seems pointless and mind numbing to look at shields. I am with you on this - I am still raising 2 high schoolers and looking forward to college for one of them next year. Plus, those shiny orange coins hurt my eyes Trying to photograph them so they turn out nice and show the error or variety is practically impossible for me. coop that was really nice of you to share about your history. I have always wondered if you were a teacher in your professional life. You really have a gift for teaching and along with that comes patience. I know loving the hobby as you do helps with the patience part of it because you go through answering the same questions over and over again (which I am grateful for). I grew up in Chicago and have only migrated south about 12 years ago. I sure do miss the snow (at times)- how about you?

Not really. I lived in it on a farm in Iowa for 30 years. This spring we had a friend pass away in Pro, Utah and had to travel there. It snowed 4 inches in two hours. Spent the night and got out of there and headed to Las Vegas. What a drive. First time seeing snow in over 30 years. I'm glad to be away from it.

I guess I was just thinking of all the fun stuff - sledding skating skiing making a snowman. I remember having to go out to the car in the middle of night to keep up with clearing the snow off my car so I could get to work on time in the morning. I guess I am crazy I even enjoyed that. I just didn't like when the temp got to 60 degrees minus with the wind chill or some of the nasty Ice storms. It took me 6 hours (instead of 45 minutes) to get home one Valentines day because the storm hit in the middle of the day so by the time they let us off early (4 pm) it was already bad and just got worse - I was lucky though because I had just filled up the tank the night before, but so many people ran out of gas sitting in traffic on the roads - it was nuts.

Sandy, I am in the North Suburbs of Chicago and I can assure you that the snow should not be missed, as I get older, I am starting to not like the snow more and more, now it's just a hassle to get through and makes my feet cold. But that is probably because winter lasted until April Last year.

Cool thread guys! Hey Coop, I spent 20 years in downtown Phx, 4th st and Roosevelt. I painted that mural on the wall of Planet earth theater on third st and Roosevelt that was there through the nineties if you remember it. Me and my buddies are responsible for that whole downtown art scene, otherwise it would have been on Grand Ave only. I'm a fine artist my whole life...never had a job since 1989 but I play bass in a travelin' band and we come through there still every Feb. You have answered every question I've ever posted on here, Thank you!

Also, I think they are cracked skulls. I tried to get a photo with a borrowed camera that I thought could do the trick, but no, it is to small.

I haven't seen that one before. I've seen several on Roosevelt and central area. Several on that street in Phoenix.
I've played Bass in several bands. At one point in my life I was a week end player for three different bands. Who ever got the gig on Saturday night would call me to schedule me. I got a call one night at a little after 9:00PM and got to the job at 10:00PM and when they introduced the band, it was the first time we played together. I played in two different big band era bands and one country band all at the same time. (small community)

Lots of siblings in your schoolhouse pics, including yours, Coop. Fortunately, quite a few of those buildings have been conserved. Some as museums, landmarks, and even a few even converted to private residences. Wouldn't you like to get under those floorboards with a metal detector and mine for old pocket change!? Mmmm...pennies.

The building was sold and moved about 1/4 mile away to be made into a remodeled house. So it is still present, but it looks nothing like the original. There are some images of the tear down on facebook that brought back a lot of memories. (and tears) 1958 doesn't seem that long ago to me. (I have a very good memory and don't seen to forget even little things)

If you you think they are spike heads check out this link and see if you can match them up to the listings - if you find a match that is great - but if can't match them then you can submit them to this website for listings of your own - that is pretty cool. Anyways here is the link http://cuds-on-coins.com/u-s-coins-...-spike-head/Really cool stuff here you all - it's like sitting around the family dinner table, enjoying a great meal and sharing our stories :)

Wow, what a cool website, thanks for the referal. I have about a hundred Cuds and cracks, I can't wait to look them all up. Found a huge one in a .50 last week. Coop, did you know Norm M. who played trombone in big bands around town for about 50 years? He unfortunatly died about 4 years ago? And...Oh, I'll bet you saw it, you couldn't miss that mural, it was huge right where going south on 3rd st right where it split's into 3rd and 4th st you couldn't miss it for all the nineties. We showed up for a gig at The Blue Pig in Moab, UT last week....we were supposed to be at the Blue Light in Lubbock TX 900 miles away...ha ha! It doesn't always go right, does it!
