By similar I meant a lot of contact marks on the face. Thanks for the extra info on strike and luster - like I said I want to learn about the grading and what to look for.

A little baggy for a 5. PCGS was, in my opinion, a bit looser in that era.

Okay so PCGS graded differently a few years back then - is that what you mean?

I agree it's over graded it's a 64 max. There are too many marks on the face, hits around 3 and 9 o'clock. Many of these are in mint state thanks to the GSA releases. Take your time and buy the coin and not the holder.

This one along with an 1880-CC (which I think is also a VAM3A- with the dash under the second 8 & Die break in G and on the left wreath) -I am just learning about the VAM's) belong to my sister-n-law and she has asked me to research and get opinions/information on them for her. I will be posting the 1880-CC later today.

I really appreciate all the information you have passed along to me in your replies.

Based on some of the opinions here, the coin was graded too high. Is that because PCGS took into account that the coin is from 1881? Are the standards lowered if the coin is not a modern day coin?

They are great coins and make sure you never crack them because at least the one you showed us is at least a point overgraded. Also I agree with what Sean sad, buy the perfect coin, not the perfect holder (except if it is a rare sample slab or a slab that was used for very little time) I got lucky. If anyone here knows sample slabs, you will like this story. So I went in to my LCS for my B-Day a while ago. I saw a sample slab and I liked it, they said Birthday Deal, 5 bucks for YOU. I said OK. That sample slab is an NGC 1.2, and one of the only ones accounted for without the Oak Tree Sticker.

Here is an article I read about over grading of coins and how that affects their value:

It's a 64 tops, with all those hits on Anna's cheek.

ALWAYS BUY THE COIN NOT THE SLAB. the coin is not MS65, at best its MS64 and I would not pay more than MS63 price for it due to the scratches. the gold toning will help it hold its value. do not remove this coin from the holder as it will never regrade at that level

One way or another it won't fetch more than 64 money the next time it sells.

MS-64, I'd sell this one and find a true MS-65.

Could this one be one of the 1881 CC VAM's? There is no dash under the second 8 but it has some other stuff.
