ebay doesn't really want to deal with the counterfeiting issue in a comprehensive way, probably because, in the end, they make too much money on coin auctions. How would you react if every single coin had to be slabbed in order to be listed? Counterfeiters know they only need to sell a few coins to make a ton of money, so they use a shotgun strategy that even vigilant hawks like the CCF cannot keep up with.

Mind blown. This thread does need a bump. Is there any more news regarding these coins? Why does ICCS not just slab them as reproductions? Some how I feel good about my cruddy coins. Maybe we should be collecting coins that have verdigris on them. I think every coin collector should read this.
Does anyone know what the cost of the production of one of these coins would cost?
Mind blown.

Good timing on bumping this thread. When I sent my last batch of coins to ICCS, I requested a grading refund for the 3 coins graded in error as authentic. I think the overwhelming consensus at this point is that all 3 coins are counterfeit. Well guess what...No refund (not that I care about the 24 bucks) but worse, Scott continues to stand by the 1891 and 1920 coins. If someone on this board in the GTA visits ICCS regularly and has a decent relationship with either Brian or Scott, I would appreciate someone would open their eyes. Being stubborn on these coins does the hobby no good (especially when you grade and holder 80% of Canadian coins) and doesn't prevent grading errors down the road in the ever growing amount of very high quality counterfeits.

Thanks for the reply. It does no good to burry our heads in the sand. Soon our marketplace will be full of fakes. Maybe all the landons are fake. How many ms coins have made their way to China to be reproduced? This is bad.
Maybe if there is more public knowledge of this issue then the government would step up and put a stop to this. Would the cbc marketplace make a story to get people really fired up.

Quote: "Maybe all the landons are fake"................ .............. Would the cbc marketplace make a story to get people really fired up. If the proper authorities are not really interested in shutting the counterfeits out and/or some qualified graders won't do their rightful job, how will a few collectors get to make much of a difference ? IMO,..Just not enough public interest and not enough money in it,..for Canadian interests that is.. I can't see marketplace touching this at this time..

I like ICCS and I always defend them, but it truly is disheartening to see their stubborness get in their way of identifying these counterfeits in a proper and competent manner.
Brian (the father) has always been stubborn and it looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree as it pertains to the son (Scott).

First impression,,, YIKES!! I got onto this article, and the original 1891 one, after recently posting a topic on fakes that I suspected on the ebay UK site. My fears were quickly confirmed regarding those but now I'm going to be pretty gun-shy about picking up anything nice, and pricey, off of ebay! I have learned a lot, thanks to all this, and much appreciate everyone's efforts, but what I most learned is I can't tell what is what! Not when it comes to the better quality fakes shown in this topic. Scary. About those fakes on ebay.co.uk I referred to, here is the link to the topic on CCF: http://goccf.com/t/308538And it looked to me like someone shut down the other dodgy autions, Morgan dollars etc. that this seller had up- they disappeared. Thanks.

I suggest that you buy Mike Marshal's CD on fakes and forgeries. He comes onto this site and still has the discs available. Also, if you ever get the chance, go to one of his seminars. He has led the effort to get fakes off ebay and has close contacts with the RCMP and Paypal. Mikey, are you out there?

I would like one of these cds. Is there any chance I can get access to the counterfit reporting pages? I understand it has been blocked from public view. Thanks Mike Marshal.

To bring this to a closure - the latest issue of the CN Journal (publication of the RCNA) has an article on this new 1891 counterfeit large cent.
