Please remember that there have been fake and fraudulent coins for a long time. Just because it was in an old collection does not guarantee authenticity. Most fake Trade dollars were made 50-60 years ago.

You may have a great dealer but they shouldn't mind if you wanted a second opinion on expensive pieces.

I think it is a very nice looking VF coin.

I am not afraid of buying raw coins. I do like to check them out.
Weight is important. If possible check the silver finess, if the shop
has a tester for checking. Check the edge ... compare it to good images
that you can find online.

If possible have them write on the sales slip that can be returned if
sent into a TPG and not authentic.

If you can get this coin at a good price ... I think it would be a good addition
to your collection.

There's a touch of porosity in a couple locations that concern me but nothing screams fake. Since it's a ~$3000 coin if genuine it needs professional in-hand authentication.

If it were me for the amount of money it will cost it BETTER be slabbed by PCGS or NGC.
And since you are asking for opinions that suggests that you don't feel confident making the authentication/originality/grading decision yourself.

For a valuable coin like this getting it authenticated by NGC or PCGS is a must, especially a person like myself who has a limited coin budget and doesn't wanna get burned by a fake.

Solid VF30 with original toning & should full grade. A good example of the type. Edge lettering looks correct from what I can see from those pictures.

The (in)famous AMERICAI variety -- That big old die gouge on the reverse is an immediate giveaway.
Variety is BB-192, B-19 (R2)

Be proud of that one, and if possible resist the temptation to put it in a plastic slab for now unless you really, really need to. I do agree that professional authentication should be sought for 1) peace of mind and 2) insurance valuation.

Looks pretty good although the rims seem a bit more sharply-defined than usual for a bust dollar. I presume the edge lettering is correct? It's one of the AMERICAI varieties BTW.

As noted, grading by PCGS or NGC should be mandatory for a coin like this.

Thank ALL of you...and yes I do feel better asking for expert opinions.

And no...I would not want to get burned. I do not have experience buying coins of this magnitude / cost
and as of yet and have never spent over $1,000 on a coin.... except for a couple of 1 oz. gold purchases.

as I wait for some additional information and answers to my questions from the seller.

Should we come to terms I will update everybody and reveal the asking price.

see if you can match up any die characteristics. compare with any auction results , in the areas I like to collect, color strike originality, surfaces matter more than grade when it comes to value. wouldn't hurt to ask a dealer that deals with these on a regular basis too. many of them are very knowledgeable, helpful and take the time to break down factors that you might not have thought of when it comes to building a great collection .

I suspect that this beauty has been doctored in the past, but it's now toned to a most pleasing, gun metal gray. If my suspicions are correct, it might slab as a details grade. That aside, it's a coin that most collectors would love to own.

One of the questions was a picture of the edge.....
We are still chatting.
Here is a couple of the pics he sent.
It looks good to me.

Honestly....my only thoughts on this coin is that it may somewhere a long time ago have had a light cleaning and it is not slabbed.
