Garoyn is right. I've have been giving coins as gifts for many years. I thought they were great. But I knew I didn't get it until I put myself in my grand daughters shoes and bought what I thought "she" would like. I put this "colorized coin" in my custom set at NGC(Gasp) & had her mother show her the set & see if there was a coin she actually liked. She went straight to this coin. I had her mom hand her the package I sent & this this was her reaction.

I hope this helps.

I noticed APMEX is offering AU Peace dollars for $23 and change. Those might be nice friend gifts, unless someone wants to warn me away from APMEX?

As for themed coins, I have a brother into hunting, another who is a freshwater marine biologist, a sister who is a oenophile and into Judaica (she married a Jewish man), another who is into cat rescue, Dr. Who and a couple other TV shows (unfortunately NOT Star Trek), and one who is contemplating a motorcycle tour through Ireland. I imagine I could find appropriate coins for each. But they'd have to be of pretty close to equal value which might complicate matters.

I love that Disney coin idea for the kidlets. Way to get them interested in coins!

Several themed coins come in various weights to fit most budgets. Most of them aren't colorized. You are light years ahead of me and many hundreds of dollars saved just by writing what your brother and sisters are interested in. I encourage you to look at APMEX as well as all the other major bullion dealers. Your local coin shop may have something as well.

Oh, also one of the people I'm buying for is a young Iranian woman I mentored through elementary and secondary school. We are still close. She's very interested in developing her young son's interest in his Persian heritage, so an attractive Persian coin with a good story behind it would really make a nice family gift. Anybody know of something appropriate? It definitely should NOT be recent--her family left Iran during the revolution and they are not fans of the current government.

You might want to ask about the Persian coin in the ancient section so it gets more attention and maybe get her a really old Persian coin.

Or: Just post your request in the WANT to buy forum. You might as well buy it from someone here.

Make a game of it. Make X number of presents, have everyone draw a number, give them the gift that matches their number.

No one can complain that you love Annabelle more.

Coins are hit or miss in my family. My kids would much rather have a starbucks or itunes giftcard than a "worthless" big piece of "old" silver. My uncle on the other hand loves coins and I bought him his first gold coin and have been building his set each year. For Easter and Halloween I give my nieces and nephew a silver round (ASE, Panda, and Kangaroo}, but for Xmas they get non coin related gifts. This year I bought them flatscreens and bluray players for their bedrooms (my sister is gonna be angry} It's all pay back from the time she bought my son a doll for Xmas when he was 4 and he cried all day. I promised I would pay her back for that and every year I spoil her kids.

That's awesome, Steele! Too bad the Tardis is already sold out--it's a bit much for a Christmas gift, but I could get it and hang onto it for her birthday.

I don't think Red Books would go over well in my family, though it might make for fine payback for the brother who gave me perfume. My other brother gave me THIS one year. Still looking for appropriate riposte.

In some parts of my family, Hanukkah gelt is definitely a stocking stuffer.
