Nice job Pete thanks! I'm pretty convinced now that they are different-even the metal flow of the die is slightly different

You are welcome. Would the die flow stay exactly the same on to different die states? Not sure about that. Perhaps a slight difference in die flow is only reflective of 2 different Die States?

The mint mark location must be different. The date digits are no where near where they should be.

Mint mark location can fail to line up if the two coins were photographed from different angles, but I don't think those two are even the same RPM. The MDS RPM is much farther to the left, that is noticeable without doing an overlay.

It is 1962-D RPM-015. An overlay matches perfectly. http://varietyvista.com/02b%20LC%20...2DRPM015.htmNice find! EDIT: Sorry, I misunderstood the question. I guess you are trying to find out which die state it is. Take a look at the photos on the link I posted, they should help.

The circulation damage makes it a hard call. It is a RPM. It looks like the V.V. 1962-D RPM-015 The location is close. But the coin condition leaves a lot to be desired. http://www.varietyvista.com/02b%20L...2DRPM015.htm[b]Looks like there was an East looking at the stage 'B' example. That would make it a D/D/D, but they didn't acknowledge it. It is gone on the stage 'C' that polished it off the die. So that maybe the example found first and then they ignored the East center line when it was found later on?
