Apart from die cracks and other Minor Varieties, I concentrate on the extremes of positioning ie. wide and narrow dates, high and low digits etc. Along with the other Major varieties repunches, different punches, etc. Charltons does not have a complete listing, but the 14th is a good place to start.

Another thing I notice is the weak strike at the bottom of the crown I assume this is the Die Deterioration

J Haxby, in his landmark book "Striking Impressions" says "this coin [the 50 cent] required such a large amount of metal to bring up the portrait that the reverse did not strike up properly".

And if I recall correctly, that was the reason the reverse changed in 1959. @pginrh can correct me though - he wrote the Charlton section.

The reverse Received a major modification in 1955 then the new design was introduced in 1959 only to be slightly modified again in 1960.

Yes, pginrh wrote the Charlton variety section and is the 50 cent guru.... you should see the "complete" variety lists that he has.

Here`s what looks like a DDR but maybe it`s die fatigue...? I`m far from an expert on this so maybe others have an opinion...

TaeKenDo: You are correct... not DDR, but it is Die Deterioration Doubling as you surmised...

Oldmike: tried to send you an E-Mail but you don't have it enabled..
