This is a 1882-S as it was minted in San Francisco. Looks XF40 to me. Welcome to CCF.

The 1882-S silver dollar is always well struck with good to great luster. You can't use "weak strike" as an excuse to go easy on this date and mint mark combination in the Morgan dollar series. This coin is well worn and nowhere near EF-40. It's a VF-25 at best. I was thinking VF-20 when I looked at it. An EF coin has wear on the high points with much of the design detail showing. This piece has a lot of wear on the obverse with only the deepest areas of the design in tact. Don't let the grading companies degrade the EF grade. An EF coin is better than this.

Hate to pile on, but, maybe VF...These in this condition are sold for melt in this area, however,it's a Morgan dollar and still a cool coin if bought properly.

VF-35+, weakly struck. Nice coin, actually. As Bill notes the 1882-S is usually well struck so it's a bit unusual to see a strike that weak.

I'm love my coins of '82, and the S-mint Morgan was one of my first. That they tend beautifully struck and abundant make them a great choice for a starting collector, like my first one was.
As a circulated coin, it is common enough that you ought to be able to cherry pick one for little premium over scrap at a coin/pawn shop with a little time and digging if that effort is worth the patience and fun of the hunt for you. Beautiful MS 62/63 tend to be at near entry level Unc prices for these.
