It may be from worn dies because the wear will show first on the outer elements from the flow of metal outward when striking over and over.

Spruett, with die moving (displacing) the material in outward direction plus looks like a bit of pressure smash on this letters. The metal planchets are tougher to strike, causes die wear faster than clad coins(copper).

Thanks crazybo I see md and Die Deterioration on practically every nickel I look at and it seems as if it's a requirement to put every third nickel in a coin roll machine and ruin it .

and I don't know what that's about. Even in change I see more Rolling Machine Damage than on others except maybe quarters. Maybe the larger coins are more susceptible?

It's odd because it makes it seem like nickels are circulating like crazy but, the possibilities don't support it.

In one cash transaction, the coins you will most efficiently receive is at most:

4 cents
3 quarters
2 dimes
1 half dollar (if they use them - negating two of the quarters)
1 nickel

Spruette it does seem like they are circulated most but I agree with your analogy of what you are most likely to receive in change. I haven't crhed quarters yet but nickels are definitely a mess !

But cents don't go into vending machines....they just end up in a jar, then on to ebay.

The die that struck your nickel was in the VLDS die state. The fields are full of die flow. The devices all start to enlarge also from this die wear. Not a keeper unless you want to save it as an educational piece to show other new collectors.

Thanks coop I'll probably toss it back so someone else can find it and put it on here and ask about it lol. I keep pics of about everything for reference . Apparently Philly has never had a good nickel die I have found the most horrible amounts of md and deterioration on these nickels . Practically ever single nickel has one or the other or both . The only decent nickels I've found are the 59 and previous and the two proofs I found last night.

Looking at the coins struck percentages, you can see the VLDS coins could number 350,000+. They is great than the number of coins the VEDS, EDS and MDS are added together. So there are better changes to get a bad coin, than to get a good die state coins. That is why they are to tossable to return back into circulation.

Wow coop that's unbelievable how they keep using the dies even after they know they are pretty much shot. But I guess it all looks the same to the naked eye . I'm surprised in all these coins I haven't found more die chips and cracks, because I have found a lot of bad coins.

They are in the business of making coins. We are the ones that are picky about them.

Nickel dies tend to break more quickly than dies used on other coins because of the hardness of the metal used (nickel). As such, I would suspect that VLDS happens earlier for nickel dies than it does for other coins.

Very true coop ! I like the dancing guy lol. You would think Xavierofgreen that nickel being so hard you would find more cracks chips and Cuds but I'm through half a box of nickels and haven't found a single one . Had it been pennies I would have already found a couple dozen .
