I'm all for change, whether it be Liberty or a new Washington design. I like the idea of my "classic" WHQ set neatly ending in 1998!

Hugemistake2003...........

In fact in a past discussion with a "U.S. critic" (augsburger....Love ya man!)months ago here on the forum.......a similar conversation began.
I "pointed out" all of the "bad stuff" and "horrible things" the U.S. had done....Slavery.....treatment of Native Americans.....and many other "ill intentioned" acts by the U.S. government........so I'm not "acting like that" at all.......(though it may have seemed so here, I admit)
I just get a little "defensive" when someone "not from this country".......expresses disparaging remarks about America or it's leaders and people....
This is not the first time this has come up with "Augsburger" and I respect him and his opinions for sure...(still love ya man!)...but I'm also entitled to voice my own opinions then.....
As far as the American/Euro coin........I was being completly sarcastic!.....There's no way that would work for reasons mentioned here....
In fact there was a "sarcastic tinge" to everything I said above.........forgive me, augsburger...and others not "getting that"......but my first reaction to "criticism of my Country" espicially from those who don't live here........is a "defensive" one !.........So I'll "lay it on a little thick"......in those occasions........it isn't "Blind Patriotism"......more "loyalty" and an "overall" view of my people and my government.......I don't like to be "run down" by outsiders.
Hugo Chavez speaking at the United Nations is a good example. After he ghastily insulted President Bush and our "government"........EVEN THE STAUNCHEST "LIBERAL DEMOCRATS" CAME TOGETHER TO BUSH'S DEFENSE !......Saying things like that about him and us in our own country......NOT COOL ! (yeah, I know that the UN in New York isn't U.S. property!).........but that's a good example of how I feel/felt.
So, maybe this will help ya see my stance a little clearer........I don't "act like the U.S. has never done evil or bad things"......not at all.....
I've spent a couple of decades trying to draw attention to the "bad things" we've done (govt. policies) and make people look at those things and care about them.......Native American issues are a "biggie" for me.......civil rights too.
Oh well......no offense meant "either way" ...I'm sure.......and none taken......
Augusburger......I love Great Britain too and hope to visit someday !.....luv ya man !.......Hope the weather in Germany is good to you !.......

"I just get a little "defensive" when someone "not from this country".......expresses disparaging remarks about America or it's leaders and people...."

That is normal, I get spaniards telling me I cannot have an opinion on ETA, and americans telling me I can never understand the constitution, purely because of where I come from. But then if you criticise the US govt and are american you are a patriot, do the same but a foreigner and you are anti-american, I find it quite amusing really.

Just to make your skin crawl because I am like that, I would blame the US for venezuela needing someone like Chavez, hehe.

But I'm not taking it as an insult or anything, I mean, I'm more into telling serbs what they did between 1990 and 1999 and that really gets some nice responses.

But to get back on topic, one of the reasons why coins are great is because they ARE political, nazi coins, coins with kings and queens, presidents and the like. If they were just nice little happy pictures that meant nothing, no one would bother. I know this isn't the place for a full blown discusions on these things, but if they affect the coinage we have then I guess whatever your opinion it is valid, because american coins are about what the people think of their country and british coins are a little royal jigsaw puzzle that even a drunkard at 3am could complete. Hmm!

I suppose the original native peoples might say that too...since most of us are somewhat recent occupiers.

Nothing personal to anyone, really...I just enjoy stirring the pot.

On the subject of criticism, the US needs to hear what other people say about our country, particularly how our foreign policy affects their lives. After all, we enjoy telling the world how to behave--so we should have an open ear as well.

I suppose I couldn't resist commenting, but I'll get back to coin talk.

Wow. Nice. Anyway, the 2010 quarter will probably be the same as the '98, but with even lower relief. I do hope I'm wrong. A new design would be great.

Augs........

Anti-American comments don't make you anti-American.....it just....err....well....uhhh........hummmmm.......means ya don't like a lot of things about us !...Hee Hee.....Liberal Democrats make a living out of it here....and they "are" called "anti-American"..."Unpatriotic"....etc...etc....etc....and that's pretty messed up!
As you enjoy saying inflammatory things to see who you might get a "rise" out of in several countries.........I don't consider myself "baited" in the slightest.....hee hee hee....mainly because...I ENJOY THE BANTER!.......the debate keeps your juices going !....I thrive on it!.......Life is a little boring without it !.....Thank God for disagreeing opinions !.....

Kurt......
In the newspaper "Indian Country Today" I saw a cartoon in there once that showed the pilgrims coming over in ships and two Indians standing on the coastline observing them and one remarked....."We really need an immigration policy"........Ha Ha LoL.....
Even knowing that Native Americans were here for thousands of years.....they "immigrated" from the "land bridge" in the Bering Sea from Asia.....the only people who "aren't" an "immigrant" from somewhere are Africans on the continent of Africa.....hence "first modern man".....(if one wanted to get technical!)
As part Naive American myself......I have A LOT of strong feelings on the mistreatment of indians here in the America's......i'd need 16 pages to go through those......but as this IS a "coin forum".......
I'll 4th the LGF Quarter !......

Eaglefoot, LOL...that's great! Humor is healthy here because human nature is the same everyone. I seem to recall some recent genetic tests that suggest N.America was populated by at least 3 distinct immigration events, so outside origin stories, nobody here is exactly "native". The same goes with the current "native" Hawaiians, who supplanted an earlier population, but I digress here...

On the subject of coins, I say it's time for a reworking of our money. I guess the US doesn't do that all at once, but I also think the dime is due for a change too.

"On the subject of criticism, the US needs to hear what other people say about our country, particularly how our foreign policy affects their lives. After all, we enjoy telling the world how to behave--so we should have an open ear as well."

Are you really sure you want to hear what others have to say? That coul dbe kind of dangerous you, they might just rip your foundations apart. I think just after "victory" in the Iraq war, the interviews with American soldiers saying things like, 'they're supposed to be our friends, we liberated them' and the like suggest that the US makes sure people don't understand what the rest of the world thinks.

But then, putting native americans on coins seems to be a sort of healing process towards a new world order (in the sense of the baseball world series is like, the US and maybe one canadian team or something like that) where america joins the rest of the world, rather than pretends to be the dictator of the world.
Everyone asks the question, why did the US invade Iraq, with it's dictator, when Zimbabwe and its dictator are left alone.

But then on the positive side, if it wasn't the US, it would be Russian, and putin is much more of a meglamaniac than any US president, even Reagan and Jackson.

Maybe they should do a cold war series, have a Stalin and Roosevelt one cent coin, kennedy and Khrushchev nickel smiling over a map of cuba, Reagan and Gorbachev quarter pulling apart the USSR and a space race 10 cent coin with Gagarin and John Glenn, and a 50 cent coin of Bush kicking Putin up the arse or something like that.

It sure did !.........don't get "baited" by it !..........coins are cool !........
You won't change "his" mind....he won't change "your" mind......won't solve anything........and in fact there will be "little to none" in the way of support for you if you make any kind of attempt I've found!.......best not to go down the road at all!........(attacking and criticizing is more widely acceptable apparantly than a positive reality is......but here in the U.S. there is a President Bush "weariness" and IT IS AN ELECTION YEAR!)
So......not hard to figure out.......

Paper money will always make great insulation for houses!
We'll see how bad the "rollercoaster" ride will be.........I have faith that "eventually" it'll get strong again.......could certainly get "bad" for several years........the '20's & '30's were certainly a "depressing" time!....and the late '70's were not peaches and cream........another recession like the one that began at the end of the Clinton presidency is here now....add the price of gas to all of that.....yeah...who knows how severe for how long ?........if the dollar gets really weak......it's happened before.....it'll likely happen again and again and again.........ahhhh history !!...
