Personally I wouldnt leave it in for 24 hours right away.... Also i'd start with a watered down mixture... No results are better than too much etching

In my opinion the first Dime looks like a D ,and the second one looks like an S .

By the way, nss52, thank you for the picture. As you can see, the position of the D on the coin you posted looks like #1.

Both of the coins look like the mint mark is an "S" to me. The coins are very worn. What is unanimous judgement of the grade of these coins. If you can read the date but not the mint mark are they AG? The mint mark means everything with a 1916 Mercury dime. I am just making a guess about the mint mark. I would not bet ten dollars on my opinion.

I too also think they are both S mint marks. They are so worn down it's really difficult to tell with 100% accuracy

I think the first one has a better shot at being a D, but I really can't tell much. I'd be hard pressed to resort to acid dating.
Rest in Peace

Looking at them again, after the D posting, not enough of an upper serif point, this should be peaking out above the wear line

Stick w/ previous opinion...both S

Gee, I have a lot of coins like this, maybe I should be as dishonest as the other guy and pull, er, make a fast buck], er, find a sucker, er, buyer (that's it!) on ebay too!

I am also thinking both of them are S mint dimes.

Guess what? I rubbed the edge of #1 on a piece of paper (a method for getting dates off of early coppers) and a D came up! It looks pretty clear to me, but who knows? I will post pictures later today!

Ugh! Can't get a clear photo. It is still hard to see. I think I will send it off to ANACS. I think it is worth the risk.

Raw: '16 P? D? S?= $1.50

ANACS: '16 D= $100-200
ANACS: '16 S= $5
ANACS: '16 P= $5

You won't believe it, but ANACS says it is a P!

Where did they get that?
