1807 Draped Bust Half. How Would You Grade?

I think you're seeing a die break above the date. I have seen worse damage in problem-free holders but agree with you that it is a details coin mainly for the rim damage.

Grade wise I can't go above Good-04. I can see the eye appeal in this coin.

I agree, G04. It may be worth submitting to a TPG, because like BH said, these early coins often can slide by in problem-free holders. It'd help a lot for resale value or just to keep in your collection.

It might be the angle of the photo, but I don't like the look of that piece. I won't say counterfeit, but I will say questionable authenticity. The Ms. Liberty just doesn't look right. Her nose is sticking out too far.

Does the piece have a lettered edge? If it doesn't, the piece is not good.

The marks above the date are from a die clash impression from the clouds on the reverse. Authenticity looks good to me, but if billjones questions it, take a second look.

This is an 1806; it's an 1807; but the Ms. Liberty was from the same or a similar matrix. Does she look to the same to you?

I also don't care for the fact that the date appears to have less wear, i.e. look stronger than the rest of the coin.

Above the date looks like a clash from the clouds on the reverse. Looks like a genuine VG-8 to me.

The edge is lettered. If I have time tonight I will try to take some different photos. I will also weigh it. I think the date appears to be higher relief due to lighting. Thanks for everyones input.

Ok, so I found an image of another 1807 half (from heritage auctions)and traced around the bust in photoshop. I then moved the outline onto a photo of my half dollar to see how it lines up. The heritage coin has very similar marks above the date and above the bust. The numerals in the date are also very similar. Here is also another picture of the reverse and a photo with it's weight in grams.

I would think it an authentic G6 but I do not have the experience most of our members have.
