Machine doubling? Is that what it's called? I'm not all that familiar with coins with errors, or whatever you would call this. I thought it had a D stamped over a D.

I'm sure someone else will chime in with some more input. But it doesn't look like a RPM (repunched mint mark), Machine Doubling is common and doesn't carry any price premium.

Gormang - I just checked the forum glossary for Machine Doubling - it's not in there, and I'd like to know what it means. Would you explain it to me? Ralph

Looks like a RPM, I'm would say a South. It has a mark on the upper serif. Their appears to be a South below the mint mark. I checked for a listing of RPMs on halves and I didn't see a die number for your coin. The book is old and there may be a newer listing for it. It would be nice to see if there is Machine Doubling on other devices close by. The split upper serif is a very good thing to see.

Coop - here are scans of the coin - nothing unusual that I can see - wouldn't have even posted it except I've never seen one with the mint mark bolixed up like that, and I wanted to find out what might have caused it. Ralph

It's a simple, minor split serif repunched mintmark. Probably not a lot of collector value or interest for that, but then again I don't know the market for Franklin half dollar die varieties (by the way, it's not an error - it's a die variety).

Okay coppercoins - I'll take your words as gospel, and that's what I'll write on the holder. I'm not really interested in market value, I just thought it was kinda neat, wanted to know what it was, and what to call it - just started checking my coins for errors and things lately, and find it fascinating Thanks.

biokemist6 - thanks - need to point out that, were it not for the help and guidance of folks right here on the Coin Community Forum, I'd probably still be posting those awful scans. :)

j_h_s - there's no such thing as "mechanical" doubling. The term is "machine" doubling.
Ralph - Not necessarily my word that matters, the image shows a split (a notch) in the upper serif. That an RPM any way you look at it.
