I did much the same thing when I was a teenager.
I collected scrap copper and brass, and sold the accumulation to a scrap metal merchant. The cash obtained was used to buy coins to add to my collection.

It's an easy way for me to add to my collection without upsetting the budget. Works out well, just takes a little while to gather a decent amount...
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I got a bicentennial quarter in the payment from the scrap yard too!

I trade the aluminum cans that I pick up for silver. I'm with you on the scrap iron. Trade that for silver too. What people toss is money thrown away.
