 to CCF. IMHO,I would not slab any bullion pieces but if you do go with PCGS.They sell at a slight premium above NGC.If you are thinking about slabbing collector type coins,post pics here on CCF first and we will let you know if they are worth the expense to have them slabbed. We look forward to your participation. I use NGC far more often because they seem to be more consistent. My own rule of thumb is that if a coin will have a minimum value of $200, then I will send it in. Everyone has to set their own minimum, although lots of folks obviously don't because of the tons of $20-50 coins in slabs. |

No. With modern coins, the way the game plays out is that if your coin comes back at MS70 or PF70, you can sell it for a bit more than cost (mint price, shipping from mint, shipping to the TPG, return shipping, grading fees). If it comes back at MS69 or PF69, you can't sell it for much above the mint costs. The way the big boys do it is they send in entire boxes of 500 for cheap ($5/coin) bulk grading. The 69s sell for cost and the 70s for a 10 or 20 or maybe 50 over cost. In bulk, with decent yield, they make money. But you can't qualify for bulk grading and the $20 or $30 per coin kills you. @Fionnsboy, save your money and don't get your coins slabbed, not as a general rule. Invest the money on more coins/ knowledge of how to grade yourself.

Many thanks for all the replies folks, it's been very helpful and you're all very kind to reply. I was thinking to grade only because there's a place right down the street from me that does it (oddly enough, and all the available services "at a greatly discounted rate," so says their website, which would of course also eliminate shipping/insurance.) Perhaps I'll inquire what they charge. No 2taol, not in Ireland, I'm just north of Boston, ach Rugadh mo Mháthair in eirinn.

to the CCF! Would you mind sharing the name of the grading company you are considering? PCGS, NGC, and ANACS seem to be considered the top three (in the United States, at least). There are, of course, a lot of other companies, but many are prone to over-grading, and should probably be avoided. |

It is generally more cost effective to but modern coins already slabbed. I personally find raw coins to be cooler, as well as a nice challenge to grade and authenticate yourself. Basically, you do you.
