I've found that 1917-P type 1 usually have a nice strike . This one is a beauty .But this raw 100 year old coin should have some kind of toning , was it dipped ? Chinese counterfeit ? Wait for the experts before you commit yourself .

If I was going to buy the coin to flip, I would not be concerned with a dip. I would be concerned with the flat spot on the lower part of the shield and the discolor on the leg above the knee as these areas could be wear that is not clearly visible. If the coin grades AU58, you have paid top dollar for a raw AU58. If you buy the coin, return privileges would be a must in case it is a AU58. The coin is worth the risk if you have return privileges.

Definitely a nice coin. Looks like a black and white image so really can't see toning or luster variances. I see a potential problem above the "We" in "In God We Trust", and rim problem at around 3 o'clock (and down a little) on the obverse. Also if you look above the ankle and scan to the right, it shows hallmarks of being cleaned. Ask for a color image before you buy, just my 2 cents.

Well, looking at it in hand is better than color photos. I bought it and I'm not worried because I can return it. Should come on Tuesday.

Agreed, in hand definitely beats photos. Please post a photo when you receive the coin, I'm always interested in how coins appear to the eye compared to photos. I'm going to start posting photos of my coins here for grading but truth be told, I'm never happy with my photos since they never seem to capture the look of the coins with the complete accuracy of the eye and loupe.

looks better than 65fh and am suspicious about the price.

That is a great looking coin, that shield is strong! The dings on the leg and gown area and the contact marks on the date are a little distracting, it's going to hurt the grade. Thinking MS-60, TPG might be more forgiving considering the overall condition of your variety 1 strike.

This coin has an odd look to it. I think that the surfaces have been etched somehow, either from too much dipping or some sort of a wipe. These coins have a frosted look when their surfaces are pristine.
I wish I could post pictures of a true MS-65, but the Photobucket problem is preventing me from doing that, and the moderators have knocked down my links to my NGC registry type set. I don't know how to post pictures here anymore.
There are issues with this coin, and that is why it was so cheap. The 1917-P Type I quarter comes well struck. The sharpness this piece has is not unusual.
