This is a nice 1st year issue of the 3 cent nickel. This transitioned the 88% copper and 12% nickel composition of the copper-nickel cents to the 75% copper and 25% nickel composition of this issue. The metal alloy was much harder and this led to striking issues.

This coin is typical of the weaker strikes in the first year. I agree with oih8tw8's ms64 assessment, but the weak strike on this coin is most evident in the first two II's in the III denomination found in the center of the reverse. The vertical lines in the first two II's are flat. The third I shows a full set of vertical lines. There are coins out there that are fully struck. This coin has pretty well defined hair in the obverse, which is flat in many coins. I would suggest trying to find a coin with fully struck vertical lines in the III reverse denomination. These are much harder to find, but well worth the extra effort.

Think it just makes MS-65. Very clean surfaces with no hits typical weak strike on the reverse. Like this coin!

64, maybe 65. Since you are probably getting this for type, I'd hold off to find a full line reverse.

Nice clean looking coin.
But the below average strike will hold the grade back.
And I think I'm seeing die clash on the obverse above the date and between AMERICA and her hair.

I think MS-64 (the die clash has minor impact).

MS64, easily, and attractive luster and surfaces. The usual clashes and cracks for this date.

It's a win at 63, in an old ANACS slab. This one is likely worth more in the old slab; hope the plan isn't to crack it.

I was going to crack it out, figured if it was undergraded I could always have the option of submitting again for a higher grade. I guess I will debate it.

There's not enough of a price difference between 63 and 64 to justify a reslab, or really, 63 and 65.

Agree. It's a nice coin but I think it lacks the eye appeal to justify resubmitting it.

Thanks guys. I was intending on cracking it for my dansco 7070. I was offered it at ms63 at around $150. If it was too pricey I was going to continue my search for a stronger strike

Why not keep it in the slab and put an AU in the album? Putting an MS coin in the album is the kiss of death for it.
