Quote: Ok so I went in to this auction with 3 coins that were on my target list. I'm a type collector so these were "common" type coins that usually are readily available but I thought, if I'm going to add one to my collection, they might as well have some provenance and be Col. Green/Newman collection coins. Well, apparently, so did a bunch of other people because these coins were going well over 2x Numismedia and PCGS Coinfacts pricing. Oh well, I guess I'm not the only one who appreciates darker, nicely toned original coins. I did manage to snag a nice Large Cent that I'm happy to add to my collection.
Don't be stingy, Chester. Post the links! That should be a CCF rule.

Here are the two I lost. I thought they went for strong money all things considered. https://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-dim...ption-071515https://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-hal...ption-071515I'm kind of mad at Heritage right now. It's the first time I bought from them in probably 4-5 years. The buyers premium for the coin I won was $34 which I get...it was included in the total cost when bidding but Shipping and Sales Tax added another $32 on top of that. I guess you get used to it and factor it into your bid but I'm kind of glad I didn't get the two coins above now.

Sales taxes depend on what state your in. I'm in Missouri where coins aren't taxed. If you have friends or family in tax free state have the coins shipped to them.

The Heritage auction proves that the Eric Newman coins DO get a premium, whether we would pay it or not. I do not think that I would pay a premium, but that is obviously not important.

This coin gave me my first woodie compliments of Col. E.H.R. Green! I kept looking and looking at it and there was just something about it that I couldn't resist.

Quote: The Heritage Auction proves that the Eric Newman coins DO get a premium, They got a premium at the auction, but how well will they hold that premium a couple years from now? Oh I would not be surprised if they always command a premium, but percentagewise they are probably at their maximum premium at the auction.

I picked up an ex col green ex Newman coin a few months ago on great collections. Overpaid a little for it but got like a 30% discount from the original sale. I'll post a picture later. My observation is the premium definitely drops after the initial sale. This can be attributed to all the marketing and large number of well heeled collectors at the first offering. At resale, those same market conditions don't always exist. Of course, if you see one you like there's no guarantee it'll show up for sale again anytime soon !

RIP Eric Newman Eric Pfeiffer Newman (May 25, 1911 - November 15, 2017) was an American numismatist. He wrote several "works about early American coins and paper money considered the standards on their subjects", as well as hundreds of articles. Newman sold his coins over five auctions in 2013-2014 for almost $55 million. (source wikipedia)

Wow. We were just debating whether or not he was still alive. RIP but I'm sure at 106 he was ready to check out. He's in a better place.
