Quote: Yes it was a 1959 D Wheat penny. It was never certified for authenticity due to the fact that it was the only one known to exist and even the U.S. mint couldn't explain it. It was sold at auction for 58,000$
We're going to need a citation for this....
So, what is your definition of a "mule?" it appears to conflict with the standard numismatic definition.
Quote: The main attraction is the 2 from his earlobe to his nose. If you concentrate there are about 12 2s on the obvwrse and on the reverse their are several more 2s and at the top of the white house if you look closely you can see the man on the horse.
This is known as " Pareidolia". I have seen it many times with new collectors. The coin is worth one cent, just like it says on the reverse side.
Coop, I remember the story about that Wheat cent mule. It's still debatable wheither the coin is real or not. They even said they had trouble selling it at first because of its questionable authenticy.
Nobody wants to find a 1959 Wheatie more than me; it'd be a birth year coin for me and that would allow the creation of a Birth Year Set nobody could ever match (except 1959).
I do not consider the known mule to be real. Just one? Nope, I don't think so. Not even deliberate surreptitious Midnight Mintage by an employee would stop at one, and I'd like to see modern noninvasive investigative technology applied to that one known coin. It's been fifteen years; XRF, for instance, has matured in that time.
Jack J , I guess it's like opening a can of worms, they tend to crawl everywhere but the hook !
I just looked at pics of the 59 mule. What hits me as strange is the direction of the die abrasions are at just about the exact same angle on both the obverse and reverse
