So, JBuck, what's the story with this coin? I still think the reverse die was messed up.

Biedercoins, I see nothing wrong with the reverse. Looks fine to me.

Okay, now I see what is going on down there! I've seen one thing and my brain has turned it into something else. I'll try to explain and see if this makes sense.

On the "ONE", the "O" has a ding at about 10:00 that is parallel to the rim itself. It is deep enough that it picks up light and alone is as prominent as the indentations that make up the edges of the moon craters. The die itself is far enough along in age (stage) that the devices - craters in this case - are moving toward the rim. [check out another IKE that it's an Early Die State strike and look at how much space there is between letters and craters] Finally, there is just enough diffusion and shallow depth of field in the photo that I saw a "piece of crater edge" overlain on the letter "O" itself. I was seeing something akin to a "nightcrawler" except in this case it was a chip that wasn't there.

As far as the DDR comment, it was the LDS and a little Machine Doubling that brought that to mind. I can't remember ever hearing of such things on a '74-D so maybe I was hoping you were giving us a new mutation!

After all this, what is the grade?

Okay, I can actually see what you were seeing. Thank you for the explanation.

I will post the grade sometime tomorrow, want to give it just a little more time.

A pair of 65's - Excellent! Do you already have graded versions of the cn-clad proof and the two silvers?

Thanks for bearing with me on that wild-chip chase

Yes. This pair makes 1974 my first complete year.

Almost! There's the elusive 1974 graded and slabbed in a 1976 holder: I've got one. So all you need to do is get my name in next year's Secret Santa and it's yours. [edit: or I could just give it to you if you want it.]

I do not think that really counts for my set. My OCD is not that bad.

I do not really need it, but would love to see it! Post a photo!

Also, I should add that while 1974 is complete, I have not bought a single 1973 yet (I am not counting the completed Dansco set, of course)! I have had my eye on a few, but have not been completely happy with them. Every other year has at least one representative.

I'll dig it out when I get back to home base. Don't finish that popcorn because it will be awhile. I bought it with some other stuff as a "lot" and didn't even notice the error until I had it in hand.

I've taken the same approach with a couple of my modern sets: filled the album (but am always looking for upgrades), then certifying the best of a subset. Always a gamble, but the anticipation is fun.
