It is still hard to determine without better, clearer images. I will send you a pm with some details that might help.

The die varieties are usually on the shield. Doubled shields I can't see the shield on your images to tell. But when you look at these on PCGS they have a few listed. The date area doesn't show any RPD that I can see. It looks like the die was roughed up around the date devices. the raised areas maybe just debris on the die. (I wondered about rust marks, then realized rust would be raised on the die, incuse on the coin. So I ruled that out.)

The 1848 half WB-104 Show a bit on the '1', but your coin just show one area affected. (above the bottom crossbar) But the angle of 1 matches. (tilted slightly left at the top)

It'll be interesting to absorb the extra 1 % increase in value charge for anything valuable PCGS discovers for a 'crossover' w/ variety attrib. from ANACS.
This will be my first 'crossover' ever submitted so I'm looking forward to get it sent out next week.
keep ya posted....

DNC ouch We still do not have any light shown to clarify the reason for the difference in the colors of both sides. Could PCGS still have already taken a True View photo so everyone could see a better visual portrayal?

I've never had a situation like this being that I attempted a crossover with PCGS from ANACS and a received a DNC (did not cross) designation.
I spent what I consider to be too much money on S/H and general non-refundable grading fees with PCGS.
Firstly, would PCGS normally have performed a variety check even if they knew that this coin was not going to cross over?
Does PCGS have any obligation to give me the variety designation if performed since I already paid for it to be done?
Secondly, what sort of remedies should I expect with ANACS since they did not grade this coin accurately as being 'cleaned'? If I wanted them to regrade this coin with a variety check, how much out-of-pocket costs should I expect to incur if any?

If you paid for variety attribution, and they had slabbed it, they should have mentioned the variety. Since they didn't slab it, the variety attribution fee should probably have been refunded. You might want to contact PCGS's customer service and see if you can get a refund for the attribution fees that they did not earn. If they say they did attribute it than they need to tell you what the attribution was. Quote: Secondly, what sort of remedies should I expect with ANACS since they did not grade this coin accurately as being 'cleaned'? ANACS owes you nothing. They rendered an opinion, and in their opinion it was not cleaned. If someone else thinks it is cleaned, that's their opinion. If you resubmitted it to ANACS and they change their mind and decided it was cleaned, then they would you something.

And you have to consider that ANACS may have graded accurately and PCGS got it wrong calling it cleaned. PCGS is not infallible, as hard as that is for some people to believe.

Has PCGS ever opined on any variety before with a letter w/o slabbing it? Has PCGS ever taken a photo of a coin if the coin did not cross?
This scenario would just be an opinion and I do not know how much weight it would even have if ANACS actually saw the results before doing their check?
I think, however, that sending it back to ANACS to do a variety check might be the way to go but I would want to feel very confident that there's a strong possibility of getting that WB-104 designation.
The ROI without getting that WB-104 would really not be worth it considering two TPGs, freight & insurance etc.

And another thing, ANACS is now a different company and they have disowned the earlier holders, so even if it regraded as cleaned they still don't owe you anything.

Quote: variety attribution fee should probably have been refunded PCGS said that because I left the 'min. grade crossover' column entry blank, their assigned grade did not meet the EF-45 I put under the 'grade' column. Therefore, they did not bother doing the variety attribution and did not charge me for that additional variety service level fee. All of these charges and classifications/descriptions in this above paragraph are found in boxes 9 and 10 on the submission form. But when I asked them what grade they assigned my coin, they refused to give me their own assigned grade. I then asked them why they wouldn't tell me the grade they determined in order to be able to make the decision to disallow the crossover. They had no explanation other than to tell me, "That's just the way it is." Is this normal business as usual for all TPGs? Just for the record, even though it's only $ 5 they also incorrectly charged me for the 'secure service fee' that will be refunded since it did not cross...

Compared to the first couple of photos uploaded in 2018, I'm sending you these just to show the true surface of a mostly uniformly toned/colored patina on both sides. The lighter colored reverse postions at 1, 3 and 6 o'clock just exhibit harsher cleaning PCGS just told me that this coin did not have any varieties. I called them today and asked if they would reconsider the grade even though they knocked down the varieties. They told me to send these new photos to determine the next possible step: prepaid shipping label, same grade or something lower etc...
