1935 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Would You Grade This A VF Or XF?

For my education, what do you see that put it lower XF and not VF?

I agree with the VF30 designation.

I'm also guilty of using XF and EF interchangably. When I was first starting out in collecting 30 years ago most guides (at least the ones I had) used the term XF. I actually like XF better but have been trying to condition myself into using the term EF as that's what's "Correct"

That's really odd, because I started in the mid-70s and used the ANA guides to learn grading...and they specifically state for the record that the grade is EF. It was around 1985 before I saw XF used the first time and wondered what drugs they were on.

For me it strikes a sour note to see XF used, just like x-ing, x-mas, x-over. Just grinds at my nerves. Same thing when I hear a supposedly educated dealer say "That coin is extra fine"....that really sets me off. Of course then again, most dealers set me off with one thing or another they do that show they are into selling widgets and don't really care about coins.

Ahhhhh....finally someone that agrees with me. I've been corrected for using EF, bah....that's it, I'm only using EF for now. All you XF peeps can kiss my grits.

1 letter or number can mean a lot today with all the data entry so X mean a lot to some & not a thing to others.

Thus my comment regarding the 'grading services'.

Many times when I go to correct a dealer's terminology, the first thing they do is grab a slab and show it to me. As if the slabbers invented grading and what they do is gospel. The dealers don't realize that grading as we know it was around for 40 years before the plastic.
