Quote: I'm guessing you would need really clear pics to give any estimate as to a grade or worth, right? Pretty much so. With blurry pics you can get a "guesstimate" grade. With clear pictures you can get more of an exact grade. Oh, and would need BOTH obverse and reverse pictures

You're looking at an XF45-AU53 coin, which from what I see on obverse shows one good sign, no split plating and no massive zinc rot beginnings. I would give it a bath in acetone. This will remove the human skin oils and other organic badboy elements before putting in 2x2. Check places like ebay for sales of this DDO, that will tell you what people are trying to bilk sell it for.

For grading, images are not a lot of help. Somethings don't show on images that do with the coin in hand. Something minor can affect the grade for a higher grade coin.

That makes sense, Mark. I know nothing about it but to me it's more greasy than anything else, like it's been handled a lot. Definitely not a premium coin. I thought acetone was only for silver coins? I could pick some up and give it a go with a test penny. The back is a bit darker and shows some toning but that's about it too. I checked ebay last night and there's no way they'd sell for that much lol. Some posts looked like they'd been up for quite some time. I'd agree with that, coop. I'd take internet grades with a grain of salt but XF45 sounds nice to me. Thanks for all the input everyone.

Here is a link to PCGS photograde. https://www.PCGS.com/photograde/That will help to grade circulation wear on coins. But any coin damage will reduce the grade. Sometimes as much as 90% if the coin is damaged.

Oh cool, I didn't know they had something like that. Thanks, I'll take a look.

These sell fairly rarely in anything other than some kind of MS condition. That said, yours is still pretty spiffy and if the reverse is anything like the front you should be in the $80-100 zone.

15 bucks? Go try and find one slabbed in TPG. Thats what some might like to buy it as. That coin fair markets at 50+ raw unslabbed for starters. If its MS62RB. up that to 77.00 plus shipping. Nice find, get that baby in plastic, send it on GC auction and watch it bring what market dictates.

Awesome find! I remember finding one of these last year in May. You have a very nice example of this DDO. Make sure to get it protected as soon as possible.

Thanks everyone. My 2x2s won't be here until tomorrow. Is it a good idea to dip it in acetone before putting it in one or is acetone bad for zinc pennies? Would hate to screw it up but was hoping it wouldn't look so greasy in the 2x2. I'll try a few gunky junk pennies first of course.

Acetone will not harm the Zinc cents. It will remove any gunk, dirt, corrosion, and freshly applied skin oils. It will look a lot better after its bath.
