There is a 1953 D over inverted D variety. Before tossing it back in the jar, take a close look at the mint mark.

Common date ... as stated no real value above face 5 cents. Quote:I might start a Jefferson nickel album. Great fun ... and this Jefferson nickel series 1938 - date is the only currently circulating USA coinage series that can still be collected from circulation.

I keep all pre-1959 coins that I find in change. They will always be at least a smidge over face value to me.
And if you tried, you probably could find someone who would give you a dollar for it, just because it's so old. That's the magic of coins--they take you back in time. And many people find that fascinating.
