Sometimes its worth bidding for them given lower demand levels and breaking the slab for the coin. All is a function of grade/price. Ignore the slab label.

I've got an idea. I am going to submit all my PCGS and NGC graded coins to SGS as crossovers. This way, I will be sure to get the most bang for my buck!

Yikes!

The first thread I read about TPGs and it's SGS.

SGS should not be considered a TPG for reasons already stated. We get the dealer want lists at work all day. About a month ago Abon was looking for a lot of Silver Eagles.
We had a lot so my boss called him. He was paying $2 over melt and a bit of toning was not an issue.

I chose the coins personally at my bosses request. I believe it was 14 rolls. Anything that was ugly went their way.

I WILL give them credit for this. They paid promptly and NO complaints about the coins.
I figured as much though as a quick dip and it's instantly an MS70. This is how SGS operates.

SGS and other similar "companies" can give you awesome deals. not all "MS70" graded coins are junk. take a close look at the coins that are being sold. although you wont find MS70 coins, there are a few 64-65. many people overlook SGS because of obvious reasons, so sometimes a $100 coin gets sold for $50 or lower.

Littleboy,

You do have a valid point. Generally they are beyond horrible and I wouldn't even CONSIDER buying unless coin was in hand.
There are occasions when, for some strange reason, a coin is graded correctly by them and that IS the time to jump on it.

They become their own worst enemy at that point due to the reputation (or lack thereof) they have built up. Enough people know their practices so they buy low.
If I see a $100 for $50 I pick it up as well. Can't say I own an SGS slabs though.

I agree with clembo. If there's a nice date which is going for a cheap price (even when cleaned) because people don't trust anything about them, it's okay to bid. Otherwise, stay away.

Do a search for

SGS Larry Bence

You'll find all you need to know about this. They are well known amongst collectors but not always known by newbies on ebay.

Thanks...

Thank all of you for your comments. I have bought coins from abon and as long as I disregard the sgs rating I basically like the coin. They certainly need to learn what a ms 70 actually looks like though. Most coins are ms 63 or lower, but better then a lot on ebay. I'm a newbie but that's my 2 cents worth.

I have read about all these "TPG'S and enjoy this type of forum.I also have ( on ebay) obtained some "sgs" slabbed coins and over all I am satisfied with the coins.I am of the school to buy the coin not the slab.I however have had an adventure with a seller on ebay who sells almost exclusively "uscg", now this seller baited and switched the coin I received. Sometimes I learn the hard way. Check out "uscg", it is a joke for a site. The slab I received was broken open and the coin was switched. I was lucky to get a refund. The seller ( once I approached him by email) , suggested I break open the slab and take it to a coin swap meet show I go to and all vendors I saw told me at best the coin was "au". It was suppose to be MS66. THIS WAS WEEKS AGO, SINCE THEN, DAYS AGO I SAW THE SAME SELLER, WITH THE SAME COIN I BROKE OUT OF THE SLAB, SELLING IT AGAIN EVEN THE SKU # ON THE SLAB WAS THE SAME.I would like to know how people like this sell all day long and have 50+ feedbacks of returned coin for overgrading reasons still are allowed to practice this deception.Reported to the proper authorities and still sorry, their overall feedback is just good enough to allow them to still sell.I have been around and heard stories about some slick people, pulling some very slick deception and con-artistry on people and now I am one of those people who thought I was going to get what I paid for was wrong. To all concerned : Beware !! and be well, MORGANS DAD.

Most of these so called "dealers", they have no more the amount of knowledge about coins as the shop at home people, tend to buy these junk slabs in bulk, and try to make a profit off of the grade on the slab. That's because, like I said before, they don't know what the hell they are doing. They have no education in coin grading or numismatics, just to try to make a ridiculous profit on these otherwise lower grade coins. I once asked one of these sellers a question about his ebay listing and what I thought he should offer this XF coin for (in a SGS MS slab), and he practically blew a fuse in his response. I drilled him with questions as to why 99.9% of his listings were SGS "graded" coins and he never responded. Yet there are unwary uneducated beginners who will pay big $$ for the slab and not the coin.

Dave,

You just hit the nail on the head when you said "Most of these so called "dealers", they have no more the amount of knowledge about coins as the shop at home people..."

From another thread here I found;

Mishap-Coins just about hit the nail on the head with his research. Richard Howard has been in the coin business for quite a while. Many years ago Richard Howard also started handling sports cards and manufactured a line of sports card supplies. Abon Cards & Coins and Ohio Coin Investments were both distributors of Howard's sports card supplies. During this time Richard Howard got involved with the Shop at Home Network and the grading service was created in order to add perceived value to the sports card products being offered on Shop at Home.

A web site was created to give the appearance that the cards that were offered had been graded by a legitimate grading company. These graded cards were also available to Abon Cards & Coins, and to Ohio Coin Investments. As the sports cards reached the end of their run it was decided that Howard's would do the same thing with coins.

If you look at the phone numbers for Advanced Grading Specialists on their web site (now only available via the Internet Archive located at https://www.archive.org ) you will find that they all trace back to Richard Howard in Leipsic, Ohio. For example, the number 419-943-7401 traces back to 119 E. Main Street, Leipsic, Ohio, 45856 (taken from the Ohio Yellow Pages Online), which is one of Richard Howard's business addresses. In addition, the address on the submission for is 141 South Main Street, Bowling Green, OH 43402. Do a quick search for this address and you will find that it is Howard's Rare Coin Gallery.

What you may not notice is that the submission address for Advanced Grading Specialists in Florida, P.O. Box 701943, St. Cloud, FL 34770-1943, is the same as the submission address for National Numismatic Certification, LLC. A quick Whois lookup of nnccoingrading.com reveals that it was registered by Bob Johnson, 5280 Countryside Ct., St. Cloud, FL 34771. So, Advanced Grading Specialists still exists in the form of Bob Johnson and National Numismatic Certification, LLC.

But, what of Larry Bence, Abon, and Star Grading Service? A quick Whois lookup tells us that Star Grading Service is indeed at 38 Church Street, Bellville, Ohio, 44813, and the web site, stargrading.org, was registered by David Sparks. So, who is David Sparks? He is Larry Bence's brother-in-law.

Tiger that was a great job of research. You enrich the community and bolster the reputation of honest dealers here and everywhere when you make this kind of information public.

Welcome, btw :D

Glad I saw this. I figured 10 PR70 grade coins (even if they are fairly common dimes) for $20 seemed a bit fishy.
