I've seen examples slabbed this way when signed by Lyndall Bass, the reverse designer.

You can request a coin be slabbed with the reverse forward. Often times, promoters will do this for certain coins to highlight the reverse (as will the above example).

As said before, you can request it on the submission forms. A friend of mine had a bunch of toned Morgan's graded recently and he had a few of the ones with reverse toning slabbed that way.

I've seen this with toned Morgan and Peace dollars where the submitter asks for the toned side on the front of the slab. I have no idea why they would do that with Shield cents, though. The shield design isn't all that special or anything.

Something NGC does for no additional charge, but I believe there is a minimum submission level.

I can understand the logic with Lincolns given there's three different reverses now.

This design has been going on now since 2010. Seems a bit late in the game to highlight the reverse when the talk of the town is that "P" on the obverse!

This isn't the first year people have had them slabbed like that....in fact it's been happening since the first year of the design for the Shields and before that for Lincolns in general

It looks better slabbed backwards anyway.

I was searching and I saw PCGS doing the same thing. How disappointing. I didn't see any with the obverse of the front!

Isn't it possible that they didn't know which is the Obverse?

No that's not possible. A decision was made for those to be slabbed that way. NGC has a solid core so there is no gasket that could have been put in backwards by mistake either

I have a silver Roosevelt dime showing the reverse on the front of the NGC slab. But that was done to show the beautiful toning on it. The obverse is brilliant, no toning. But this cent looks like nothing special, so I'm guessing it was done at the request of the submitter
