to the CCF! We usually refer to Indian Head cents as IHCs. The 1877 and 1909-S are considered the key dates of the series. Depending on your budget, you may have to purchase both these coins in lower grades. When I'm putting together a set, I don't go by the R rating, population, etc. I usually purchase the coin with the best eye appeal that I can afford. The coin you purchased is an excellent example to start off with, especially with the CAC approval. Usually, when a coin is CAC approved, you can count on it being a high-quality coin. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Of course - of your IHC set!

There are semi-keys that will set you back a good amount too depending upon the grade and quality. 1866-1872, 1876

and a real beauty to start your collection with! Eye appeal and grade are my first two when thinking about adding a coin to my IHC collection. I usually discard purchasing 10 - 20 before pulling the trigger on 'the' one.

That's a great looking IHC . So is your strategy going to be all slab coins or will you be breaking them out to put in an album ? I believe IHC collecting is in class by itself . My unfinished set are all raw circs ,but I focus on nice no problem VF-25 to EF-45 . BTW this is going to be tough but try to keep the color of your coins be it red, brown or red & brown as close together as possible ,it will make for a nicer looking set when viewed all together . Good luck !

Nice coin. Myself, I put all coins in Albums. Slabs take up to much room.

Thank you everyone what a warm welcome. It is hard to know if I will stick with slabs or play the crack out game and fill a dansco. While I like dansco albums it might be harder to view the coins if dark in color. However I really don't care for bulky plastic slabs. My current goal is if the piece is attractive and somewhat affordable I will pursue it. I am will to pay a little more but have to be mindful of my other collection involving liberty Seated quarters. Overall, I enjoy the 1840's up to the 1890's when the westward expansion ceased. I though will be very happy to pursue a 1908-s and 09-s.

That is a heck of a starting coin! IHCs are my favorite series. My strategy and budget has been to collect UNC examples from about 1890-1909, and settle for VF-AU for ones earlier than that. I find original VF-XF IHCs to still be very attractive.

Thanks Mike1487 it will be a fun but expensive journey. However it is much better than spending money on things that waste away. Do you have any images of your favorite pieces ?
