One of my first radars from a regular withdrawal at my local branch, a few years back:

Thanks "Tee" (I still remember getting that note like it was yesterday - but fail to remember what I had for breakfast the day before LOL)

I got this 2 digit radar from a small run of FIVES I withdrew over the weekend:

Over the past 2 decades I have withdrawn large amounts of FIVES &/or TENS & posted some of my finds above. Once every blue moon I will hit a small run of collectible notes, like this FER TEN DOLLAR replacement:

Every once in a while I come across a $5 repeater:

& every 3-4 years I must thin out my collection.

Just curious, since the X in prefix for replacements how does the community agree on what is a replacement ?

Several brick searchers noticed small runs of different prefixes in sealed bricks of Birds FIVES. They started to track these Bonin-Thiessen GOT & GOV, to ascertain the serial number ranges. They discovered the 20,000 note range were functioning as insert replacements. At first, it may have been just testing by the BoC because X notes were still being released. Eventually, however, larger ranges (400,000) of Knight-Thiessen ANH & Knight-Dodge GPZ were once again seen in other bricks (with different prefixes). This was why Charlton started tracking the insert ranges. Eventually inserts were discovered in the other denominations but were never found in the discontinued TWOS. They're all pretty rare for the BIRDS except for a few later well documented discoveries that were being discussed on the CPMF.

The practice carried over to the Journey series & some prefixes may have been intended to be used exclusively as replacements. (We'll likely never know). I believe this may have been the case for the 2004 Jenkins-Dodge HOH (so few were discovered & several ranges of 2005 HOH were used as replacements. The highest serial number reported for the 2004 HOH $5 was 0187000 (though 5.9M were supposed to be printed). Knight-Thiessen FDZ are just replacements & J-D BEK were likely intended to be exclusively replacement since very few non-insert 2003 BEK were discovered.

The use of sheet replacements stopped with the polymer Frontiers series. Near the end of the Journey, Single Note Replacements (SNR) were being discovered (in economical smaller batches) and it's either that or just a decision that they would use extra prefixes (& save money) were likely reasons that inserts were finally stopped around 2015.

I have not seen a pre polymer note in I can't even remember how long. I'm assuming they don't get stocked in ATMs. Does the mint have a recall program for older notes? I have some friends that have gotten the odd old bill back in there chance at random stores.

Usually, when the Bank of Canada (BoC) introduces a new series, bank employees are instructed to keep the older paper currency that is deposited. It goes into a damaged or discontinued pouch (which is likely larger than just one pouch for series change-over cycles). They send this older currency back for replacement with the new series. From problems with the BIRDS series onwards, the BoC started to replace larger denominations first.

In 2011, they started to recall Journey $100, then $50, $20 a year later. $10 & $5 were recalled in 2013 and the TENS disappeared faster than the FIVES due to their low # in circulation (compared to the FIVES & TWENTIES).

The BoC orders large runs (stacks, reams or bricks) of notes from the CBN Co (Canadian Banknote Company) not the RCM (mint). Coins such as the Loonie/Toonie & others come from the mint. The BoC usually supplies the big banks headquarters with these large stashes of cash & these banks keep the orders in large vaults or in escrow (stored elsewhere for use on demand).

So any small run of any prefix would most likely be a form of a replacement note, the BOC has sure made procedures and changes regarding a simple letter or symbol to show replacements, not sure what the BOC is worried about like having bricks with mix serial # or like the US a star symbol has worked for many decades. Thanks for the info

Thanks! I should ask friend at the bank if he can grab me some older bills, he has pulled many bills for his own collection. And I'm sure would happily get me any his branch has for face value. I would like to have some older bills for my collection.

Be carefull with your friend at the bank, protect him or her, when the banks get old notes returned they are directed or against bank policy to return these notes back into the public

Ya I'm always safe about it, he is able to get anything for himself without issue, but tells me just like with all the 1¢ coins he has gotten me and 1-2$ bills to never bring them into the same branch he works at if I decide to bring them back to the bank. He pulls stuff for me and hooks me up outside of work for face value

In return I help him build little sets and goes him information on coins he wants to know about(or bills) definitely a great connection that I would never want to loose, as well as becoming a good friend of mine.

All that said I haven't asked about bank notes yet so it could be different. And you are good in thinking it might not actually be a him even though that's what I refer to them as on here.
