Dam! Tough crowd. This was one Gerry Fortin personally selected from the Baltimore show. Guess it didn't live up to the hype! I was a click away from pulling the trigger and taking his word for it. It's graded xf-45 by PCGS.

48's with eye appeal continue to be an elusive date for my set. Sometimes I feel like I'm going backwards.

Wow I didn't expect that grade! No way in my mind it could've been XF based on the obverse. Reverse looks like a 35, 40 on a good day.

I'm at VF-35 and very unattractive. 45 seems too high a grade.

I mean IMO its still a very collectable coin, but I think you could find a nicer one for Your set Mike.

VF35, PCGS holders (lightly or marketably) cleaned classic coinage all day long, and will upgrade. But how they got XF45 based upon the pictures? Would have to see it hand

He actually said it was conservatively graded. Maybe he just takes bad pictures but he told me the coin has original surfaces. Given the amount of respect he holds in seated circles, I can't imagine his description would be deceptive. I've never purchased coins from him. Here was Gerry's description:
Low Mintage Date, Choice Original, Lightly Mirrored Fields, Gray with Aquamarine-Gold, Conservative Grading . 1848 Philadelphia strikes have a tiny mintage of 15,000 coins, and survivors are scarce at all grade levels. This conservatively graded example offers choice surfaces that are lightly mirrored with few blemishes for such a large sized coin. Typical gun metal gray patina is evident during in hand viewing. Adding a light source exposure the underlying luster including intermixed gold, aquamarined, rose and sky blues on both sides. A pleasing specimen with above average quality. Housed in 2015 style PCGS holder with edge view insert and Large Eagle listed on the label. I suspect that this piece will have a short stay in GFRC inventory.

I would have passed on the coin as it does not look XF45. Gerry does an overall good job with his descriptions. His photos/scans do lack in color and picking up mirror surfaces. Here is a recent coin I purchased from Gerry: His Photos:  My reverse photo of what the coin looks like in hand. I am still working on the obverse photo as I am having a hard time with picking up the mirrors and color.   |

I could go XF40 here but my guess would have been 35. There must be some luster that is not showing (or I can't see it) in these images.

I have bought from Gerry many times. His descriptions are pretty accurate but his photographs sometimes look different than the coin (sometimes for better, sometimes for worse) Here is one I bought recently, you be the judge   With regard to this Seated dollar, I agree with consensus; can't see more than 40 with the current pictures Edited by Steelers72
